  • Patent number: 11819821
Abstract: An activated carbon sorbent composition comprising activated carbon and a passivation agent, wherein the activated carbon sorbent composition exhibits reduced self-heating or auto-ignition properties as compared to the activated carbon. The activated carbon sorbent composition may be utilized to sequester contaminants such as mercury from a flue gas stream. The passivation agent includes a sulfur species, and may be a sulfur oxide compound, a sulfide compound, or an organic sulfur compound. Methods for the manufacture of the activated carbon sorbent composition and for the sequestration of contaminants in a flue gas stream using the composition are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20230024585
Abstract: A multi-functional composition of matter that is useful for injection into a flue gas stream to rapidly and efficiently remove mercury from the flue gas streams, particularly at above average flue stream temperatures of about 340° F. or higher. The multi-functional composition of matter may include a fixed carbon content of at least about 20 wt. %, a mineral content of from about 20 wt. % to about 50 wt. %, a sum of micropore plus mesopore volume of at least about 0.20 cc/g, a micropore volume to mesopore volume ratio of at least about 0.7, and a tapped density of not greater than about 0.575 g/ml. These compositions may be further characterized by number of particles per gram of the composition of matter such that the composition may have at least about 0.8 billion particles per gram, or even as many as 1.5 billion particles per gram.

  • Publication number: 20220380238
Abstract: Systems and methods for passively dosing fluid with a consumable additive in a controlled and measured fashion. A capsule containing the additive is placed in a fluid reservoir and passively doses static water in the reservoir over time. Instead of directly exposing the additive to the dispensing system's fluid, fluid within the capsule's internal volume becomes saturated with dissolved additive and then diffuses to the dispensing system's fluid through one or more openings. The one or more openings are sized so the that the diffusion occurs at a predetermined rate, and are positioned on the capsule to prevent an undesirable fluid exchange which extends the life of the additive and maintains a constant diffusion rate. The size of the cartridge can be selected to control the volume of fluid that is passively dosed within the reservoir, thereby controlling an overall concentration of additive in the total volume dispensed.

  • Publication number: 20220314193
Abstract: Methods for the manufacture of sorbent compositions, sorbent compositions and methods for using the sorbent compositions. The methods include the utilization of an acidic halogen solution as a source of a halogen species that is dispersed on a solid sorbent. The use of the acidic halogen solution results in a highly active halogen species that demonstrates improved efficacy for the removal of heavy metal(s) from a flue gas. The sorbent composition includes a substantially amorphous halogen species associated with a solid sorbent such as powdered activated carbon (PAC).
