Patent number: 8397164Abstract: An apparatus and method for loading media in a digital cinema system is described. Specifically, the digital cinema system has a received storage medium and a local storage medium. A user is prompted to present the received storage medium. Responsive to the user specifying the received storage medium, a list of image programs is displayed. Responsive to the user specifying the image program, a list of audio programs is displayed. Responsive to the user specifying the audio program, how much storage space is required to store the selected image program and audio program on the local storage medium is determined. If the storage space required on the local storage medium is insufficient to load the selected image and audio programs, a warning indicative of insufficient storage space is displayed. Each selected program is then authenticated.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2001Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: Technicolor Digital Cinema LLCInventors: Jesse Hose, Carl Andrew Mueller, Vijaya Kumar Janjanam, Christopher Wingert

Publication number: 20070291944Abstract: Methods and systems for blackout provisioning in a communication network. In an aspect, a method is provided for blackout provisioning in a distribution network. The method includes determining one or more affected regions, and generating a blackout key based an original key and the affected regions. The method also includes encrypting content with the blackout key to produce encrypted content, and transmitting the encrypted content and an encrypted version of the original key over the distribution network. An apparatus is provided for blackout provisioning that includes provisioning logic to determine one or more affected regions, a key generator to generate a blackout key based an original key and the affected regions, encryption logic to encrypt content with the blackout key to produce encrypted content, and a transmitter to transmit the encrypted content and an encrypted version of the original key over the distribution network.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 3, 2007Publication date: December 20, 2007Inventors: Christopher Wingert, Pooja Aggarwal, Philip Hawkes

Publication number: 20070260881Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate digital rights management in a wireless communication environment. Generally, content (e.g., data files, video images, etc.) can be downloaded and maintained in its encrypted state to ensure protection of digital rights. Consequently, programming applications that utilize such content decrypt the content at the time of use (e.g., playback or access). A file interface can be provided that allows applications to access encrypted content utilizing a standardized file I/O interface. Decryption of content can be transparent to individual applications utilizing encrypted content. Therefore, modifications cryptographic algorithms or procedures and changes in key sizes need not affect the programming applications.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2007Publication date: November 8, 2007Inventors: Maksim Krasnyanskiy, Christopher Wingert, Pooja Aggarwal

Publication number: 20070206799Abstract: A Digital Rights Management (DRM) system provides a lightweight layering of encryption and decryption of keys that allows efficient use of different cryptographic techniques to effect the secure delivery of multimedia content. Asymmetric cryptography, where a public key is used to encrypt information that can only be decrypted by a matched private key, is used by the DRM system to deliver symmetric keys securely.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 28, 2006Publication date: September 6, 2007Inventors: Christopher Wingert, Pooja Aggarwal

Patent number: 7203319Abstract: An apparatus for installing a decryption key is initially arranged so that a decryption algorithm received by a control processor is passed via a first interface path to a decryption processor. The algorithm is installed in the decryption processor together with a program decryption key. The apparatus is subsequently arranged so that encrypted working decryption keys received by the control processor are passed on to the decryption processor over the first interface path. The decryption processor decrypts the encrypted keys using the program decryption key. Decryption keys are thus obtained and are transferred via a second interface path to decryptors for use in decrypting encrypted program signals input to the decryptors.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2001Date of Patent: April 10, 2007Assignee: Qualcomm, Inc.Inventors: Liat Ben-Zur, Curtis D. Publication number: 20060013401Abstract: The present invention encompasses an electronic device, such as a server, which may be operated in a communication system. The electronic device comprises a method for receiving a request from another electronic device to transmit keys, for example a mobile terminal. Responsive to the request, the server generates the required keys and determines a best time to send the keys to the mobile client device such that a new connection is not required just for sending the requested keys. The best time to send the keys may be during a scheduled connection for sending non-key data, for example a connection setup for transmitting system parameters, content data, etc. By sending the keys along with the non-key data, a need for a special connection is avoided.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 14, 2005Publication date: January 19, 2006Inventor: Christopher Wingert
