Patent number: 8737474Abstract: A scalable video bitstream may have an H.264/AVC compatible base layer and a scalable enhancement layer, where scalability refers to color bit depth. The H.264/AVC scalability extension SVC provides also other types of scalability, e.g. spatial scalability where the number of pixels in BL and EL are different. According to the invention, BL information is upsampled in two logical steps, one being texture upsampling and the other being bit depth upsampling. Texture upsampling is a process that increases the number of pixels, and bit depth upsampling is a process that increases the number of values that each pixel can have, corresponding to the pixels color intensity. The upsampled BL data are used to predict the collocated EL. The BL information is upsampled at the encoder side and in the same manner at the decoder side, wherein the upsampling refers to spatial and bit depth characteristics.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2007Date of Patent: May 27, 2014Assignee: Thomson LicensingInventors: Yong Ying Gao, Yu Wen Wu, Charles Chuanming Wang

Patent number: 8423855Abstract: An adaptive and scalable packet error correction apparatus and method in a wireless multicast network is provided. Each retransmission request from a receiver contains a round number and the number of repairs sent in that round. At each receiver, there are two counters for counting the rounds sent out on the network and the number of repairs that have been required. A receiver on the wireless multicast network listens to the ARQ requests sent by other receivers to update the two counters and determines whether its request should be suppressed or be sent out.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2007Date of Patent: April 16, 2013Assignee: Thomson LicensingInventors: Xiao Jun Ma, Huan Qiang Zhang, Ren Lei Chen, Guang Hua Zhou, Jun Li, Charles Chuanming Wang

Patent number: 8289936Abstract: A public wireless LAN permits receipt of non-authentication traffic, such as access information requests, from a mobile wireless communications device prior to device authentication by partially opening a controlled port within an access point. The wireless LAN re-directs such non-authentication traffic received at the AP from the mobile wireless communications to a local web server. The local web server provides reply to the mobile wireless communications device, enabling a determination by the device whether or not to request access. The device seeks access by way of an access request received at the AP. In response, the AP re-directs the access request through an uncontrolled port in the AP to an access server that authenticates device. Upon successful device authentication, the AP fully opens its controlled port to permit the exchange of traffic through that port with the mobile wireless communications device.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2003Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Thomson LicensingInventors: Charles Chuanming Wang, Sachin Satish Mody, Junbiao Zhang, Kumar Ramaswamy

Patent number: 8005086Abstract: The invention is related with the problem of utilizing data compression in a network of distributed stations. Often header compression is used to improve the bandwidth usage in networks, in particular wireless networks. Header compression could be implemented in access points or routers, but both implementations have serious problems, e.g. due to limited CPU power, lack of scalability, or handover latency. To resolve the problems the invention proposes to use a dedicated data compression server in the network and a new protocol to transparently deploy data compression in the network.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2006Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: Thomson LicensingInventors: Huan Qiang Zhang, Zhi Gang Zhang, Chuanming Wang, Lin Xiang Cheng
