  • Publication number: 20190278137
Abstract: Techniques for driving a dual modulation display include generating backlight drive signals to drive individually-controllable illumination sources. The illumination sources emit first light onto a light conversion layer. The light conversion layer converts the first light, such as blue or ultraviolet light, into second light, such as white light. The light conversion layer can include quantum dot materials. Liquid crystal display (LCD) modulation drive signals are generated to determine transmission of the second light through individual color subpixels of the display. These LCD modulation drive signals can be adjusted based on one or more light field simulations to account for non-uniform, spatial color shifts. Alternatively, one or more light field simulations based on a uniformity assumption determine intermediate LCD modulation drive signals. A compensation field simulation, using backlight drive signals, is then used to adjust the intermediate LCD modulation drive signal for color correction.

  • Patent number: 10373569
Abstract: A first and a second light valve control values are derived for a first and a second frames, respectively, in a specific region of a display panel based on image data of the first and second frames. It is determined whether a difference between the first and second light valve control values exceeds a light valve control threshold. If so, a light source driving waveform is constructed to comprise a sequence of light source control pulses for controlling one or more light sources designated to illuminate the specific region of the display panel. The sequence of light source control pulses is constrained to start at a start time plus a transition time interval. The transition time interval allows light valves in the specific region of the display panel to complete a transition between the first and second light valve control values.

  • Publication number: 20190213966
Abstract: A non-uniform illumination pattern is determined with a display panel of a display device. The non-uniform illumination pattern comprises different values of the one or more illumination properties in first and second spatial regions of the display panel. An illumination compensation pattern is generated based at least in part on the non-uniform illumination pattern. The illumination compensation pattern is configured to homogenize values of the illumination properties in a plurality of spatial regions of the display panel that include the first and second spatial regions, and implemented in the display device.

  • Publication number: 20190172216
Abstract: While a viewer is viewing a first stereoscopic image comprising a first left image and a first right image, a left vergence angle of a left eye of a viewer and a right vergence angle of a right eye of the viewer are determined. A virtual object depth is determined based at least in part on (i) the left vergence angle of the left eye of the viewer and (ii) the right vergence angle of the right eye of the viewer. A second stereoscopic image comprising a second left image and a second right image for the viewer is rendered on one or more image displays. The second stereoscopic image is subsequent to the first stereoscopic image. The second stereoscopic image is projected from the one or more image displays to a virtual object plane at the virtual object depth.

  • Patent number: 10157592
Abstract: Techniques for optimizing light output profiles in display systems are described. A light output profile is defined in relation to a plurality of sample locations on an illuminated surface. Point spread functions that satisfy illumination performance values specified in the light output profile in aggregate are computed or derived. A design process that adds or removes optical components to a display light assembly derives an optimal design of a light illumination layer for display systems. Relationships and parameter values determined in the design process may be configured into display systems along with the optical components for the purpose of generating optimized light output profiles in the display systems.

  • Publication number: 20180068637
Abstract: An input media signal encoded with a portion of image data to be rendered with a target display device is received. It is determined, based on the portion of image data, whether a first power profile is to be applied to rendering the portion of image data with the target display device. In response to determining, based on the portion of image data, that the first power profile is not to be applied to rendering the portion of image data with the target display device, a second power profile is applied to rendering the portion of image data with the target display device.

  • Patent number: 9826226
Abstract: An image sensor of a camera configured with a diffraction grating is used to capture a diffraction image of an image rendering surface of a display device, for example, while a target image is being rendered on the image rendering surface of the display device. The diffraction image of the image rendering surface of the display device is analyzed to obtain measurements of native display capabilities of the display device. Display capability data is transmitted to a display management module for the display device. At least a portion of the display capability data is generated from the measurements of native display capabilities of the display device that are obtained from analyzing the diffraction image of the image rendering surface of the display device.
