  • Patent number: 7412124
Abstract: Techniques for designing optical devices with high reflection isolation are disclosed. According to one aspect of the devices, a pair of conjugate optical filters is used. To preserve the performance of the filters and minimize insertion loss, a lens has a first side and a second side, the first side being preferably perpendicular to an optical axis of the lens, and the second side being nearly perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens. Thus one of the conjugate optical filters is deposed towards the first side of the lens and the other one of the conjugate optical filters is deposed towards the second side of the lens. When a reflected light from one filter, presumably carrying residuals of a transmitted signal, hits another filter, the residuals are blocked, resulting in great isolation for the R-channel from the T-channel.

  • Patent number: 7289733
Abstract: New designs of optical devices, particularly for adding or dropping a selected wavelength or a group of wavelengths as well as multiplexing a plurality of signals into a multiplexed signal or demultiplexing a multiplexed signal into several signals are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, a reflected light beam from an optical filter is caused to go through the same optical filter at least one more time to minimize a residual signal embedded in the reflected light beam, wherein the residential signal is caused by the imperfect spectral characteristics of the optical filter. According to another aspect of the present invention, a reflective element is so positioned that the reflected light beam is bounced back to the optical filter. When the reflective element is another optical filter being substantially similar to that optical filter, the reflected light beam is equivalent to having transmitted.

  • Patent number: 7262904
Abstract: Improved designs of optical devices for processing optical signals with one or more specified wavelengths are disclosed. According to embodiment, a filter mirror assembly appears an ā€œLā€ shape and provides a filtering function as well as a reflecting function. The filter mirror assembly is so mounted that a rotation thereof will not alter the optical path the beam positions of signals resulted from a rotation of the filter mirror assembly. To cancel or minimize a lateral shift introduced to a light beam going through an optical filter, an optical compensator is introduced and rotates oppositely whenever the optical filter rotates.

  • Patent number: 7155831
Abstract: A ceramic cutting tool (100) is for high speed cutting of light, thin and soft materials. The ceramic cutting tool includes an upper blade (10) and a lower blade (20) both made of ceramic material. The upper and lower blades therefore possess extremely high hardness, and excellent wear resistance and heat resistance. This increases an operating lifetime of the ceramic cutting tool. Furthermore, the lower blade can alternatively be a lower blade assembly (30). The lower blade assembly includes a metal base (32), and a ceramic edge insert (31) detachably mounted in the metal base. If the ceramic edge insert becomes worn or is damaged, it can be easily replaced by a new ceramic edge insert. There is no need to replace the metal base.

  • Patent number: 7103246
Abstract: Techniques for designing optical couplers are disclosed. According to one aspect of the optical couplers, different from the prior art couplers, a holding tube (a sub-assembly) for holding an optical lens (e.g., a GRIN lens) and an optical filter (e.g., a thin film filter) is formed by concatenating two single tubes, one for accommodating the optical lens and the other for accommodating the optical filter. The two tubes are not required to have an identical dimension. As a result, inherent flexibilities are provided in the holding tube, especially the optical filter often comes in different sizes. Further, when the sub-assembly is inserted in a sleeve, only either one of the two tubes is secured to the sleeve so as to reduce a risk that, during a thermal condition change, any metal and glass material expansion will not cause the sub-assembly to be under stress that would otherwise be present when both of the tubes are secured to the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 7013069
Abstract: Designs of optical devices particularly useful for separating channels signals that are originally multiplexed are disclosed. In accordance with one design, an optical filter configured to reflect a particular channel signal is positioned to receive a multiplexed signal at a small incident angle so as to minimize residuals of other signals in the channel signal. To further increase isolation from the other channel signals, another filter is introduced to transmit only the reflected channel signal, the another filter has a frequency response reciprocal to that of the original optical filter. One of the key advantages, benefits and objects of the designs is to increase channel signals separation efficiency by increasing isolation among separated channel signals.

  • Patent number: 6999656
Abstract: New designs of optical devices, particularly for adding or dropping a selected wavelength or a group of wavelengths are disclosed. In one aspect, no collimators or the like are used. Instead, two fibers are coupled effectively via a concave mirror. Depending on the shape of the concave mirror that may have a shape substantially similar to a portion of an oblate spheroid or sphere, the facets or tips of these two fibers are positioned near or upon the foci of the oblate spheroid or the center of the sphere. Utilizing the special characteristics of the concave mirror, these two fibers can be optically coupled with minimal loss and without the use of any optical collimators.

  • Patent number: 6931173
Abstract: Techniques for controlling and monitoring MEMS optical switches are disclosed. In one embodiment, an electronic feedback loop is employed to determine a control signal to a MEMS switch actuator in accordance with an instruction. The control signal is so determined in such a way that the switching statuses are maximally guaranteed. To generate an appropriate control signal, AC or DC impedances of the MEMS switch are detected and used to configure the control signal to drive the switch. When it is detected that the impedance changes do not meet respective thresholds, the control signal is adjusted. In the case that the stiction happens, the switch actuator is overcharged, discharged and repeatedly applied for a limited time to overcome the stiction.

  • Patent number: 6894846
Abstract: New designs of optical devices, particularly for adding or dropping a selected wavelength or a group of wavelengths are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical filter is positioned a distance from a first lens to form an assembly with a mechanical axis. The optical filter is configured at a selected wavelength and reflecting light beams at wavelengths other than the selected wavelength and transmitting a light beam at the selected wavelength. The distance is obtained with respect to a reflection measurement of a light beam at a wavelength other than the selected wavelength such that the reflection measurement is minimized. A second lens is initially positioned towards the optical filter. Before being fixed with respect to the assembly, the second lens is laterally shifted from the mechanical axis of the assembly to collect with a minimum loss a light beam refracted from the assembly. Such lateral shift also benefits when a light beam comes out from the second lens.
