Publication number: 20230378646Abstract: Techniques and apparatuses are described that implement collocated mm Wave and sub-6 GHz antennas. An apparatus includes at least one mmWave antenna that produces a near-field radiation region and a far-field radiation pattern in a mmWave frequency band. Disposed within the near-field radiation region is a sub-6 GHz antenna that produces a radiation pattern in a sub-6 GHz frequency band. The sub 6 GHz antenna is able to positively affect the far-field radiation pattern from the mm Wave antenna (e.g., via steering and/or broadening). In this way, the mmWave antenna and the sub-6 GHz antenna can be collocated to conserve space while also steering and/or broadening the far-field radiation pattern of the mm Wave antenna.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2021Publication date: November 23, 2023Applicant: Google LLCInventors: Pei Li, Chun Kit Lai, Vijay L. Publication number: 20210296774Abstract: This document describes an integrated cellular and ultra-wideband antenna system for a mobile electronic device. The cellular and ultra-wideband antenna are located in close proximity to one another, along with a circuit designed to enhance isolation between the two antennas. The circuit is also designed to enhance the efficiency of the cellular antenna by permitting the ultra-wideband antenna to generate an additional resonance in the cellular band. The integrated cellular antenna and ultra-wideband antenna results in reduced mutual coupling and performance degradation of the antennas, and the cellular antenna may gain enhanced bandwidth and efficiency.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 19, 2021Publication date: September 23, 2021Applicant: Google LLCInventors: Ming Zheng, Chun Kit Lai, Seckin Sahin, Krishna Katragadda, Vijay L. Patent number: 9608327Abstract: The range of a Near Field Communications (NFC) in an electronic device is boosted by positioning a magnet near the center of a spiral loop NFC antenna. The magnet interacts with a modulated magnetic field generated by the antenna, concentrating the power of the modulated field. The magnet may be part of another component of the device, such as a magnet in the zoom mechanism of a camera. If the electronic device has a metal case, performance of the NFC antenna is further enhanced by including an opening through the metal over an axis of the magnet and a segment of the antenna's spiral loop, and by extending the opening to eliminate a parasitic current pathway around the antenna. The extended opening in the metal case significantly reduces the effect of eddy currents generated in the housing that counter the NFC magnetic field.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2014Date of Patent: March 28, 2017Assignee: AMAZON TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: Seng Chin Tai, Chun Kit Lai, Adrian Napoles

Patent number: 9397727Abstract: An electronic device including a Near Field Communication (NFC) antenna and a slot antenna is described. The slot antenna may be formed by a slot opening in a housing of the electronic device. The slot opening may be shaped as a rectangular slot, a T-shaped slot, or T-shaped slot leading into a circular opening. The slot opening exposes the NFC antenna and allows the NFC antenna to radiate in a first frequency band while the slot antenna radiates at a second frequency band.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2014Date of Patent: July 19, 2016Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ulf Jan-Ove Mattsson, Chun Kit Lai, Peruvemba Ranganathan Sai Ananthanarayanan, Namhoon Kim, Eswarappa Channabasappa, Adrian Napoles, Anuj Dron, Rohit Sammeta, Seng Chin Tai
