  • Patent number: 9191842
Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatus for reporting signal quality in overlapping Multimedia Broadcast Single Frequency Networks (MBSFN) areas. A UE may determine a signal quality estimate for each of two or more overlapping MBSFN areas based on Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) information and Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) information for the MBSFN area. The UE may then determine a combined signal quality based on the signal quality estimates of the MBSFN areas.

  • Publication number: 20150327156
Abstract: A mobile device determines that a primary cell (PCell) and a secondary cell (SCell) belong to a same multicast-broadcast single frequency network (MBSFN) area or that the PCell and the SCell can broadcast the same service. The mobile device determines a communication state of the SCell. If the SCell is active, the mobile device compares signal quality on the PCell and the SCell and selects to decode broadcast content on the PCell or the SCell. If the communication state indicating the SCell is deactivated or released, the mobile device switches to decode the broadcast content on the PCell. If the SCell is released and if the mobile device determines that the PCell is also released, then the mobile device switches to decode the broadcast content on the PCell and initiates a neighbor cell search.

  • Patent number: 9173192
Abstract: Transfer of Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services (MBMS) over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) service and idle mode unicast service for a mobile entity from a source base station to a target base station may be managed by a base station or mobile entity of a cellular wireless communications system (WCS). Operations related to the transfer may include obtaining an MBMS status of the mobile entity, and/or obtaining MBMS support information for the base station. A network entity may facilitate MBMS discovery by a mobile entity, by transmitting a data element to the mobile entity including service identifiers mapped to corresponding cell identifiers to indicate respective MBMS services to be broadcast in an WCS area on adjacent cells identified by respective ones of the cell identifiers. The MBMS services may be broadcast within the WCS area using the adjacent cells previously indicated in the data element.

  • Publication number: 20150304989
Abstract: Embodiments methods implemented with a server or a processor of a mobile communication device (e.g., a multi-standby communication device) reduce the redundancy information needed to achieve adequate reception service on a first radio access technology (RAT) sharing an RF resource with a second RAT. The device processor may implement at least one tune-away management strategy that mitigates the amount of data for the first RAT that is lost during the tune-away event. Thus, by implementing the one or more tune-away management strategies, the device processor may ensure that less redundancy information overhead is needed to correct or replace lost or partially received data, improving latency, channel usage, and the first RAT's overall reception performance. In some embodiments, a server may implement one or more strategies for including redundancy information into data that is sent to a first RAT to mitigate the negative effects of tune aways on the first RAT.

  • Patent number: 9166052
Abstract: A multiple gate semiconductor structure is disclosed having a thin segment of semiconductor with first and second major surfaces that are opposite one another, a first gate on the first major surface of the segment, a second gate on the second major surface of the segment opposite the first gate, a first differential input coupled to the first gate, and a second differential input coupled to the second gate. Preferably the semiconductor structure is symmetrical about a plane that extends through the thin segment between the first and second major surfaces. When a first voltage of a first polarity is applied to the first input and a second voltage of the same magnitude as that of the first voltage but of opposite polarity is applied to the second input, a virtual ground is established in the structure near its center of the segment.

  • Patent number: 9161280
Abstract: Techniques are provided for a broadcast client of a wireless communication network. A method may include receiving broadcast content via broadcast delivery on a first resource associated with a first set of carriers. The method may include determining, during unicast idle mode, a second set of carriers comprising neighbor carriers in a current cell. The method may include modifying handoff priorities of the first set of carriers and the second set of carriers based on membership of each carrier in a common set of carriers comprising the first and second sets of carriers and further based on a priority order specified by the wireless communication network. The method may include determining whether to hand over to at least one carrier in one of the first and second sets of carriers based on a handoff decision that takes into account the modified handoff priorities.

  • Patent number: 9148831
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for using a location of a mobile station (MS) and information about neighbor base stations (BSs) to assist network entry and initialization, scanning, and/or handover operations are provided. The location of the MS may be ascertained by determining the Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of the MS internally or by receiving the location from, e.g., a GPS device external to the MS. The information about neighbor BSs may be retrieved from a BS information database based on the location of the MS. The BS information database may reside within the MS, be broadcast periodically to the MS in an effort to update the MS's internal database, or be stored in the network operator's database. Knowledge of the MS's location and information about neighbor BSs may reduce the time spent during network entry, scanning, or handover, and thereby, power consumption; and may increase the bandwidth usage efficiency.
