  • Patent number: 7027989
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for transmitting real-time data in a multi-access system which eliminates clipping of the data while reducing transmission delays. The invention can be incorporated in any multi-access system where transmission resources are allocated when there is information to transmit. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is incorporated in a multi-access wireless system for the upstream transmission of voice from a mobile station to a base station. Each speech segment received at the mobile is shortened by appropriate editing and buffered until transmission. By editing and buffering speech segments as they are received, clipping can be eliminated while reducing transmission delays.

  • Patent number: 6971600
Abstract: The invention compensates or normalizes for the non-linear oscillation speed of the spool in a fishing reel through use of a special shaped guide slot. The guide slot can be shaped through combining a number of curves into the length of the slot. In particular, for each end of the guide slot there is contained a curvature section, such that both ends of the guide slot are curving toward the spool side in one design or away from the spool in the other design. This general shape of the guide slot improves the contact position between the pole and the level wind bracket, and also compensates for the non-linear speed of the spool. The shape of the guide slot also reduces the wobbling or jiggling that occurs during operation of the reel when compared to conventionally designed reels.

  • Patent number: 6913216
Abstract: The invention involves a holding mechanism located between and pivoting at two points, the first point at the rotor, and the second point at a location found on the primary bracket. In addition, the invention allows for the holding mechanism and the trip mechanism to be efficiently positioned on the primary bracket side of the rotor such that there are only a limited number of components remaining on the other side of the rotor, thus allowing for the rotor to be designed into a more complex shape, with a lighter weight and with a better balancing. The seizing or binding force during release of the bail wire mechanism is also reduced, since the bail wire, or other extended feature does not separate the holding and release mechanisms. In addition, the holding mechanism being pivotable between the two pivot points provides a smoother and more trip responsive fishing mechanism.

  • Publication number: 20050133651
Abstract: The invention involves a gear mechanism in a fishing reel having coatings applied to the gears. The coating promotes the reduction of friction between a gear couple and improvement of wear and/or corrosion resistance when compared with conventional systems. The invention includes the application of one or multi layers of substances on a surfaces of a gear couple. The gear couple may be either the driving gear or driven gear in the couple and one of the gears of the couple has an outermost golden layer, which includes the element gold.

  • Publication number: 20040252681
Abstract: Communication apparatus having interfaces for exchanging data with first and second neighbors, a memory for storing codec information regarding the communication apparatus and a control entity operative to detect a message from the first neighbor, the first message being indicative of codec information regarding an originating entity. In response, the control entity assesses compatibility between the codec information regarding the originating entity and the codec information regarding the communication apparatus. If the assessment is positive, the control entity self-identifies the communication apparatus as a candidate for terminally supporting a subsequent codec-bypass negotiation with the originating entity. If the assessment is negative, the control entity self-identifies the communication apparatus as a candidate for non-terminally supporting such negotiation.

  • Patent number: 6766291
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for controlling the transition of a bypass capable codec between operative modes, based on a certain characteristic of the audio data signal processed by the codec. The apparatus relies on a control signal to determine when the codec will switch from one mode to another. This control signal reflects a characteristic of the audio data signal received at the apparatus, such as the type of speech activity or the format of the audio data signal. When in the active (non-bypass) mode, the apparatus relies on an additional control signal to switch to the inactive (bypass) mode. This additional control signal is received from a control unit at a remote codec that indicates that the remote codec is also bypass capable, hence the decoder at the first codec and the encoder at the remote codec can switch to the inactive mode to pass between them the compressed data frames.

  • Publication number: 20040131051
Abstract: A data communication apparatus, comprising an interface for enabling communication with a remote entity via a network and a control entity in communication with said interface. The control entity is operative to establish a packet-switched connection with the remote entity through the network and to negotiate with the remote entity using in-band signaling entry into a codec-bypass mode of operation. In this way, a codec-bypass connection, which enhances speech quality, can be established over a packet network, which reduces bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 6721707
Abstract: A signal processor for effecting the conversion of an audio data signal from one format to another. The signal processor has a signal converter that can selectively acquire two operative modes, namely a first operative mode and a second operative mode. In the first operative mode, the signal converter transforms the audio data signal from one format to another and releases the converted audio data signal from the output of the signal processor. In the second operative mode, the signal converter is disabled and permits passage of the audio data signal to the output without conversion. The signal processor has a control unit for controlling the transition of the signal converter between operative modes. The control unit enables the signal converter to pass from the first operative mode to the second operative mode when at least one operating condition has been satisfied.

  • Publication number: 20040004957
Abstract: Data communication apparatus including a port and a control entity. The control entity is operative to establish a connection with a remote entity over a first path and negotiate with the remote entity using in-band signaling over the first path establishment of a second path allowing the exchange of data between the data communication apparatus and the remote entity. The invention presents advantages from the standpoint of ease of implementation and bandwidth and resource savings. The use of an in-band messaging protocol to negotiate a establishment of the second path can be implemented generally in a straight forward manner. At the same time, the ability to transfer at least part of the connection to the second path avoids the drawbacks that would arise if that part of the connection were constrained to the first path. This feature allows the operator to take advantage of benefits provided by the second path but not available to the first path.

  • Publication number: 20030236909
Abstract: Apparatus communicating with a mobile and a remote base station. The mobile is assumed to have a coding unit capable of operating in at least one mode selected from a set, each mode in the set being associated with a coding requirement. The set is characterized in that it has at least one mode that is associated with a greater coding requirement than a “designated” mode. Also, the apparatus comprises a control entity suitable to establish a tandem-free transfer of data received from the mobile to the remote base station. The control entity is operative to send control information to the mobile to cause the coding unit therein to operate in the designated mode prior to establishment of the tandem-free transfer. By forcing the mobile to operate in the designated mode, it is guaranteed that the tandem-free transfer can be achieved.

  • Publication number: 20030210659
Abstract: An audio communication apparatus having a first interface for communicating with a first remote entity that has a plurality of codecs that can be selectively enabled to process audio data, and a second interface for communicating with a second remote entity. The audio communication apparatus has a control entity for negotiating a TFO connection with the second remote entity by exchanging TFO control data with the second remote entity. During this exchange, the second remote entity sends to the control entity TFO control data conveying information identifying one or more codecs. The control entity includes a codec selector to select at least one codec of the first remote entity for processing audio data. The codec selection is based at least in part on the one or more codecs identified in the TFO control data sent by the second remote entity to the control entity and by the codecs available at the first remote entity.

  • Patent number: 6483857
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for transmitting control information over an audio data stream, such as PCM coded speech information. The device comprises a control unit having two inputs receiving the PCM speech samples and control information signal. Each PCM sample is made up of a plurality of bits arranged according to different significance positions, such as position 0, 1, 2, 3, _N, where N+1 is the number of bits in the sample. The control unit receives a selected sample and shifts a bit at a selected significance position to a lower significance position. The empty slot at the predetermined significance position is used to receive a bit from the control information signal. The compound signal thus obtained is then released over a transport path, such as a T1 link, for transmission to a remote location.
