    Abstract: A method of producing an optical attenuator with any desired attenuation, by parallelly overlapping and welding two fibers at their ends. A light source is connected to one of the fibers and a power meter is connected to the other. The fibers is heated until readout of the power meter reaches a predetermined value, and a mode filter is applied to the welded portion to prevent unstable mode condition.
