Patent number: 8151529Abstract: A curved beam of fiber composite material. The beam includes a first flange curved in a longitudinal direction, a second flange curved in a longitudinal direction and having a greater longitudinal extent than the first flange, and a web curved in a longitudinal direction and extending between the first flange and the second flange. The beam includes a fiber composite laminate including layers of fibers having different fiber directions, wherein a fiber density per unit of area of the second flange is lower than a fiber density per unit of area of the first flange, and wherein the first flange, the second flange and the web are seamless, continuous, and unfolded in a longitudinal direction.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2010Date of Patent: April 10, 2012Assignee: SAAB ABInventors: Bjorn Weidmann, Claes Rudqvist, Max Krogager, Mikael Petersson

Patent number: 8097198Abstract: A method for producing an article of composite material. A female molding tool is provided. A form bag is provided. At least one prepreg is placed in the molding tool. A heel shaped hard tool part. A hard tool part is placed at the female tool close to an edge of the laminate being placed in the mold. The form bag is placed in the female tool so that the bag seals towards the heel shaped tool part, in such a way that, at a later air evacuation of the bag, an increased pressure that the bag will apply towards the laminate reaches a radius before the pressure reaches an edge.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2006Date of Patent: January 17, 2012Assignee: SAAB ABInventors: Max Krogager, Mathias Larsson, Claes Rudqvist, Jan Vaara

Publication number: 20110127698Abstract: A method and an apparatus for conforming a blank onto forming surface sections of a forming tool by drawing a vacuum against an elastic vacuum bag for transmitting forming forces from the elastic vacuum bag to the blank. The elastic vacuum bag includes at least one bag section having a different stiffness than other bag sections. The at least one bag section is an elongated bag section having a stiffness larger than that of surrounding bag sections. The location of the elongated bag section of the elastic vacuum bag corresponds, when the elastic vacuum bag after completion lies against the forming surface sections having the blank in between, with an elongated forming surface section of the forming tool where the blank requires a forming force being larger than that of the surrounding bag sections.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 27, 2009Publication date: June 2, 2011Applicant: SAAB ABInventors: Torbjörn Alenby, Jan Andersson, Mikael Petersson, Per Hallander, Claes Rudqvist

Patent number: 7670525Abstract: A method for fabricating a curved beam from fiber composite material. A flat fiber composite laminate including a plurality of layers and at least two different fiber directions is formed. The fiber composite laminate is disposed in contact with a male tool includes a first flange, a second flange and an intermediate web. The male tool is curved in its longitudinal direction with a radius of curvature in such a way that the first flange has a shorter longitudinal extent than the second flange. The fiber composite laminate is brought into contact with and secured to the first flange of the male tool. The male tool and the fiber composite laminate are then rotated relative to one another so that the fiber composite laminate is brought into contact with the intermediate web of the male tool in a first rotational movement, and brought into contact with the second flange of the male tool in a second rotational movement.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2005Date of Patent: March 2, 2010Assignee: SAAB ABInventors: Björn Weidmann, Claes Rudqvist, Max Krogager, Mikael Petersson

Publication number: 20070138695Abstract: The present invention relates to a stiffening element (1) and a method for manufacturing of a stiffening element (1) of composite material, which stiffening element (1) is provided for attachment to a curved shell surface (9). A substantial flat blank (29) of composite material comprising a first (13) and a second (15) essentially parallel elongated edge is provided for forming in the web (3) of the stiffening element (1) at least one rounded bulge (19) having a conical form tapering from the first edge (13) to a first folding line (17). Thereby is achieved a curved flange (5), which first folding line (17) essentially merges with an apex of the rounded bulge (19).Type: ApplicationFiled: November 30, 2006Publication date: June 21, 2007Applicant: SAAB ABInventors: Max Krogager, Claes Rudqvist, Bjorn Weidmann, Mikael Petersson

Publication number: 20070098930Abstract: A method for producing an article of composite material comprising the steps of: providing a moulding tool of a female type; providing a form bag; placing one or several prepregs in the moulding tool; providing a heel shaped hard tool part; placing said hard tool part at the female tool close to an edge of the laminate being placed in the mould; placing the form bag in the female tool so that the bag seals towards said heel shaped tool part, in such a way that, at a later air evacuation of the bag, the increased pressure that the bag will apply towards the laminate reaches a radius before it reaches an edge.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2006Publication date: May 3, 2007Applicant: SAAB ABInventors: Max Krogager, Mathias Larsson, Claes Rudqvist, Jan Vaara

Publication number: 20060216480Abstract: This invention concerns a method for fabricating a curved beam from fiber composite material. A flat fiber composite laminate (2) comprising a plurality of layers and at least two different fiber directions is formed. The fiber composite laminate (2) is disposed in contact with a male tool (1) comprised of a first flange (1a), a second flange (1c) and an intermediate web (1b), which male tool (1) is curved in its longitudinal direction with a radius of curvature R in such a way that the first flange (1a) has a shorter longitudinal extent than the second flange (1c). The fiber composite laminate (2) is brought into contact with and secured to the first flange (1a) of the male tool (1).Type: ApplicationFiled: December 1, 2005Publication date: September 28, 2006Applicant: SAAB ABInventors: Bjorn Weidmann, Claes Rudqvist, Max Krogager, Mikael Petersson
