In one embodiment, a stimulating electrode assembly is provided that includes a non-conductive substrate, a first electrode mounted on the non-conductive substrate, and a second electrode mounted on the non-conductive substrate. The first and second electrodes are spaced apart along a longitudinal length of the assembly and extend along a lateral width of the assembly such that the electrode can be positioned at a plurality of laterally offsetting positions relative to a nerve extending longitudinally between the first and second electrodes while remaining in contact with the nerve.

    Abstract: A reservoir-and filter system for receiving fluid and for removing impurities from fluid is provided in an embodiment of the invention. The system includes a housing with at least two cavities; a first cavity with at least one unfiltered-fluid inlet and a second cavity with at least one filtrate outlet. In this embodiment, a filter member is disposed so as to separate the cavities. In addition, a filtering trap is disposed so as to directly accept fluid as it enters the first cavity, filter it, and minimize clogging of the filter member. A coarse filter shroud providing a funnel shape at the opening of a cup-shaped trap is included in a preferred embodiment. In an embodiment, at least one gas outlet adaptable for connection to a vacuum source is associated with the second cavity. A method for removing impurities from blood within an extracorporeal circuit is also provided in a further embodiment.

    Abstract: The liquid removal system of the present invention is designed to permit efficient liquid removal as needed through the use of an interface device. The interface device is provided with a membrane which has and is capable of maintaining a vacuum on one side so that when liquid contacts the opposite side of the membrane the liquid passes through the membrane and is removed from the interface device by a maintained vacuum to a receptacle for disposal. When used as a female external catheter system, the present invention is designed to remove urine from incontinent female hospital and nursing home patients and even patients under home care.

An indicating device such as a light bar display or digital readout indicates the strength of the induced signal for locating, independently of the relative angular orientation of the probe and the catheter, the depth in the tissue of the catheter.

Locator (34) includes an amber LED indicator (42) which is energized when the locator (34) is behind the detector (12) and the monitored output voltage is in phase with the generated alternating current and includes a red LED indicator (44) which is energized when the locator (34) is beyond the detector (12) and the monitored output voltage is 180.degree. out of phase with the generated alternating current.
