  • Publication number: 20120039534
Abstract: Disclosed is a processor-implemented method for processing image data comprising a plurality of pixels and system for performing the method. The method includes the following acts: determining at least one type of data represented by the plurality of pixels, determining, for each type of data, a number of pixels from the image data representing that type of data in the image data, and determining a compression scheme for compressing the image data based on a relative or absolute amount of each type of data in accordance with a predetermined scheme. The type of data may be determined by received input (e.g., user selected type and compression quality) or by analyzing its pixels and comparing it to thresholds. Basing the compression technique on the data type allows for better selection of a compression technique (e.g., MRC or JPEG), and thus greater image quality, compression ratios, and file size.

  • Publication number: 20120014620
Abstract: A method for performing binary image reduction on binary image data includes receiving binary input image data; determining a conversion factor to scale (i) an input resolution to an output resolution and/or (ii) an input size to an output size; applying the conversion factor to the input image data to obtain intermediate data, where each intermediate data corresponds to at least one input pixel and at least a portion of another input pixel; obtaining a binary output image data comprising a plurality of output pixels by thresholding the corresponding intermediate data; determining an error value for each output pixel, the error value is a non-integer value obtained as a result of thresholding the intermediate data corresponding to the output pixel; and propagating the obtained error value to an adjacent output pixel in a scanline, where the output image data is scaled to the output resolution and/or the output size.

  • Patent number: 7742658
Abstract: The disclosed systems and methods pertain to the processing of large format images in a manner to avoid introducing imaging defects, and more particularly to dividing the large image into bands, processing these bands in parallel and then putting them back together in to create the final processed image. The methods include the use of overlapping the image bands, padding of the bands prior to processing and the redefinition of image values at common boundaries of the bands to minimize or eliminate visible defects.

  • Publication number: 20100110468
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system and method for diagnosing a failure condition of an image processing apparatus. When a failure condition is detected in an image path during output of a document, a fault code is issued. The image processing apparatus is then capable of performing an internal diagnosis to generate a diagnostic report, and send the diagnostic report and fault code to an operator at a remote location. The system and method allows one to diagnose a problem or failure condition more quickly and efficiently, thereby cutting down on service time and costs.

  • Publication number: 20090161136
Abstract: A method and apparatus for configuring an image path of an image processing apparatus is herein described. The image processing apparatus includes at least an input terminal or scanner for inputting or scanning document into image data and an output terminal or printer for printing documents. The method includes selecting one of a plurality of output modes using a selection device associated with the image processing apparatus. Based on the selected output mode, an image path among a plurality of image processing elements of the apparatus is selected among a plurality of image paths. Each image path corresponds to one of the plurality of output modes. After a document is scanned with the scanner into image data, the image data is processed with the processing elements in the selected image path, and output or printed based on the processed image data.

  • Publication number: 20080266580
Abstract: The embodiments describe calculating and store scaling information based on processing input binary image data. By manipulating data that is received in binary format, the most cost effective method for scaling may be chosen. The input image data is scanned, a resolution (e.g., for display or output) is determined and a scaling method is determined. If the input binary image data needs to be scaled down to a smaller resolution, the binary image data is processed and scaled and then converted to grayscale image data. If the image data must be scaled to a larger resolution, the input binary image data is first converted to grayscale image data before processing using a segmentation tag-based scaling method. The scaled image data may then be output to an output device, such as a display, printer, or image output terminal.

  • Patent number: 7319545
Abstract: A method permitting an end user to recalibrate a color reproduction device. The color reproduction device includes a device for converting the native color values of the scanner into a device independent color space, a test target, and the desired values of each patch of the test target. The method includes printing the test target and scanning it with a scanner that forms a part of the color reproduction device. The device compares the desired values with the values obtained from scanning the printed test target to obtain a set of adjustment values to compensate for drift in the output of the color reproduction device. The compensation emphasizes restoration of the overall gray balance of the color reproduction device and can be implemented by modifying the tone reproduction curves or the halftone process used in the color reproduction device.

  • Patent number: 7295341
Abstract: In a system for processing full-color image data, such as within a digital color printer or copier, a four-channel architecture is used. Three of the channels handle image data relating to primary color planes, such as CMY. In the other channel, values relating to the K value which goes with the CMY values for each pixel alternate with a B value, suitable for pure monochrome rendering of the pixel in the image. When it is desired to print or display the image in monochrome, the B values are isolated from the K values.

  • Patent number: 7227669
Abstract: Selective edge softening and selective edge dithering is introduced into an image representation to improve local control where halo problems are expected. Selective areas of dilation are isolated and separately dithered or halftoned, the result of which is then swapped back into or substituted for the stored original image. In this manner misregistration and color plane-to-plane interactions can be compensated for in plural image forming station architecture systems. The same technique is also valuable in monochrome systems as an aid to overcoming edge displacement and slow toner problems when the selective edge softening is selectively applied to edges which are in particular perpendicular to the fast scan direction.

  • Publication number: 20060291015
Abstract: Present systems and methods enable user-defined image processing parameters to be applied as intended in some regions of a scanned image without applying them in other regions. More specifically, present systems and methods enable a digital reproduction system to automatically adjust for any inherent interactions between separate image processing modules. Present systems and methods need not be concerned about color adjustments that are made by user-defined settings since the system would automatically adjust for interactions between user-defined settings and automatic adjustments that are made by the system. Present systems and methods provide the flexibility that would be obtained by re-arranging the imaging modules in the processing path of an image processing system.

  • Patent number: 7050627
Abstract: A system and method for generating achromatic components for output incorporate receiving input color data defined in a first color space. The received input color data is converted to intermediate color data defined in an intermediate color space. Typically the intermediate color space is defined only in terms of chromatic components. A black or achromatic component is then calculated. The black or achromatic color component is a function of both the input color data in the first color space and the intermediate color data in the intermediate color space. This black or achromatic color component is associated with the intermediate color data for further processing and output.

  • Patent number: 6944341
Abstract: An anti-aliased, or gray-edged, image is characterized by comparing the image to a number of loose-templates having a plurality of elements and at least one element having a range greater than zero. As families of loose-templates are compared to the anti-aliased input image, one or more sets of patterns, or features, are recognized and extracted to produce various screens of features that generally describe the anti-aliased input image. An arbitration technique is then performed on the sets of features to produce feature vectors which, in turn, can be used to control line-widths within the anti-aliased input image.
