  • Patent number: 4310285
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a foldable propeller assembly adapted for connection to a drive shaft. The propeller assembly includes a propeller carrier having an open end portion defining an axially extending mounting socket for receiving the drive shaft and a hub end portion spaced from the open end portion. A pair of propeller blades are pivotally mounted on the hub end portion for movement from a folded-together, collapsed position to a radially outwardly extending operative position in response to rotation of the propeller carrier and for movement from the operative position to the collapsed position in response to cessation of rotation of the propeller carrier.

  • Patent number: 4302196
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a marine propulsion device including a drive shaft housing mounted for vertical swinging movement about a horizontal axis relative to a boat, a propeller shaft rotatably mounted in the drive shaft housing and having an axis of rotation, and a propeller carried by the propeller shaft. The marine propulsion device also includes a first bevel gear mounted in the drive shaft housing and in coaxial relation to the propeller shaft, a second bevel gear mounted in the drive shaft housing and in coaxial relation to the propeller shaft, and a clutch mechanism for selectively drivingly connecting the bevel gears to the propeller shaft. The marine propulsion device also includes an annular thrust flange extending from the propeller shaft and for transmitting axial thrust from the propeller shaft to the drive shaft housing.

  • Patent number: 4041889
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an outboard motor including a lower unit comprising a propeller adapted for rotation under water, and a swivel bracket adapted for mounting to a transom bracket for vertical tilting movement about a generally horizontal axis. A kingpin assembly including a pivot shaft is supported by the swivel bracket for rotation about a generally vertical axis, the pivot shaft having fixed thereto a pinion and means for supporting the lower unit. A rack is located below the generally horizontal axis and engages the pinion. The rack is supported by the swivel bracket to afford generally horizontal movement of the rack, which horizontal movement effects rotation of the pivot shaft and the lower unit about the vertical axis. Hydraulically activated plunger mechanisms connected to the rack are provided for effecting horizontal movement of the rack and thereby affording control of the rotation of the lower unit about the vertical axis.
