  • Patent number: 6179308
Abstract: A wheel end assembly for a steerable rear axle of a four wheel steer motor vehicle chassis comprises a constant velocity joint drivingly interconnected with an axle shaft of the steerable rear axle, along a lateral axis defined by the axle shaft, and a wheel assembly for transmitting driving torque therebetween. A yoke has a main body portion with a central, laterally-extending pass-through for the constant velocity joint and is fixedly mounted to the chassis. The yoke has an upper and a lower ball joint arm which laterally extend towards the wheel assembly, where each ball joint arm has a ball joint passage therethrough. A knuckle for transferring steering rotation to the wheel assembly comprises a flat plate body with a central, lateral opening for the constant velocity joint to pass through and splined upper and lower ball joint pockets.

  • Patent number: 5094323
Abstract: A sliding caliper disc brake assembly in which the caliper housing has apertures slidably receiving support pins in caliper mounting ears. The ears are provided with boot protectors which receive the support pins through one or more side wall apertures. The boot protectors fit closely to the caliper housing and to the support pins so that road dirt, water, chemicals and other debris are substantially prevented from entering the apertures formed in the caliper mounting ears. The boot protectors may also function as lubricant retainers so that lubricant retained therein may further protect the sliding surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4487295
Abstract: A pressure actuated disc brake has a mechanical arrangement for actuating the disc brake for parking. It has a coil spring clutch mechanism, or a sprag clutch mechanism, acting on a sleeve nut, which is threaded on a piston shaft. A drive arrangement causes the clutch mechanism to grip the sleeve nut and rotate the nut to move the shaft and piston to mechanically actuate the brake.

  • Patent number: 4306639
Abstract: A light weight metal caliper housing has cored holes in the cast bore. A nylon bore insert lines the bore side wall. A molded flex piston has hydraulic fittings incorporated as a part of it and the fittings extend through the cored holes. The center portion of the piston is shaped to permit piston flexibility for axial expansion and contraction. The forward end of the piston is closed by a thermal protector, the outer surface of which is engaged by the back of the brake shoe. A low rate extension spring within the piston returns the piston to the fully non-applied position. The spring has one end attached to a plate which resists movement within the free piston but is moved when sufficient brake lining wear occurs so that the extension force applied through the spring during brake apply overcomes the resistance of the movable plate to such movement, causing the movable plate to assume an adjusted position.

  • Patent number: 4306635
Abstract: A self-adjusting rear disc brake assembly provided with a parking brake to mechanically actuate the disc brake, as well as having hydraulic service brake actuation, has a confined air space between the outer piston and the inner piston. The pressure compensator and seal embodying the invention operates to maintain the confined air space substantially at ambient air pressure while preventing contamination of the brake actuating mechanism by air borne contaminants normally encountered in the area of a vehicle rear brake mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4181145
Abstract: A self-adjusting rear disc brake assembly provided with a parking brake to mechanically actuate the disc brake, as well as having hydraulic service brake actuation, has a confined air space between the outer piston and the inner piston. The two-way check valve embodying the invention operates to maintain the confined air space substantially at ambient air pressure while preventing contamination of the brake actuating mechanism by air borne contaminants normally encountered in the area of a vehicle rear brake mechanism.
