  • Patent number: 5536550
Abstract: A glass fiber insulation product comprises irregularly-shaped glass fibers of two different glasses having differing coefficients of thermal expansion, with the irregularly-shaped dual-glass fibers exhibiting a substantially uniform volume filling nature, and providing improved recovery and thermal conductivity abilities even in the absence of a binder material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 16, 1995
Date of Patent: July 16, 1996
Assignee: Owens Corning Fiberglas Technology, Inc.
Inventors: Ronald A. Houpt, Russell M. Potter, Tod D. Green, David P. Aschenbeck, Clarke Berdan, II
  • Patent number: 5508079
Abstract: A conformable insulation assembly is provided and includes a mineral fiber batt of a binderless fibrous material of substantially long fibers. The insulation assembly is capable of conforming and expanding its shape to an area into which it is installed better than prior art insulation assemblies.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 15, 1994
Date of Patent: April 16, 1996
    Assignee: Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technology, Inc.

  • Patent number: 5421133
Abstract: An insulation product comprises an elongated blanket of fibrous insulation material having a facing on one major surface, the facing extending beyond the edges of the blanket to form opposed flanges, the flanges having first reinforcement fibers extending longitudinally along the outer edge zones of the flanges, and the flanges having intermediate zones positioned inwardly of the outer edge zones, and provided with second reinforcement fibers of a lesser density so as to provide a visual indication of the boundary between the outer edge zones and the intermediate zones of the flanges.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 20, 1993
Date of Patent: June 6, 1995
Inventors: Clarke Berdan, II, Roy E. Shaffer, Ray G. Stout
  • Patent number: 5362539
Abstract: A mineral fiber insulation assembly is disclosed. The insulation assembly includes a longitudinally extending mineral fiber core having opposed major surfaces, opposed side surfaces and opposed end surfaces. A low friction polymer film is positioned adjacent the major surfaces and the side surfaces. At least one of the side surfaces is attached to the polymer film. A plurality of openings are provided in the polymer film adjacent at least one of the side surfaces. The insulation assembly is readily compressible and expandable at the job site. The low friction film provides easy installation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 30, 1992
Date of Patent: November 8, 1994
    Assignee: Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technology Inc.

  • Patent number: 5350063
Abstract: An insulation shipping package for compressible insulation products comprises at least two insulation package units, the insulation shipping package having a ratio of major face edge dimensions less than about 1:1.5, the insulation products being compressed to a greater extent in the insulation shipping package than in the units so that when the insulation shipping package is opened into individual units, each individual unit has two generally rectangular major faces and a ratio of major face edge dimensions less than about 1:1.5.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 13, 1993
Date of Patent: September 27, 1994
    Assignee: Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technology Inc.

  • Patent number: 5318644
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making an insulation assembly is disclosed. A plurality of mineral fibers are moved along a conveyor system after having been cut to desired sizes. A section having a major surface is moved in a direction generally normal to that of following sections, while maintaining the major surface in a plane parallel to the plane of the major surfaces of the following sections. A plurality of the individual sections move through an encapsulation module where they are assembled and covered to form the insulation assembly.

Date of Patent: June 7, 1994
    Assignee: Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technology Inc.
Inventors: Merle F. McBride, Clarke Berdan, II, James W. Scott
  • Patent number: 5277955
Abstract: An insulation assembly for insulating buildings is disclosed. The insulation assembly includes a low density, binderless, mineral fiber mat, such as a binderless fibrous glass batt which is covered by a layer to form a package. The batt is joined to the package by an adhesive and air passageway is defined by the package for directing atmospheric air to the batt. The insulation assembly is lightweight and has a compression ratio in excess of 6:1.
