Publication number: 20090071904Abstract: The membrane structure according to the present invention has a top layer containing three plies. The top ply has UV stabilizers embedded therein; the bottom ply has stretch-resistant elements embedded therein; and the middle ply contains a co-extruded polyvinylidene chloride barrier film for example, for protecting the top ply against bio-gas infiltrations therein. In another aspect, the top and bottom plies containing polyethylene for protecting the middle ply from the weather and from corrosive environments under the membrane cover. In yet another aspect, the membrane structure has two foam layers affixed to the bottom ply. Each foam layer is made of juxtaposed strips of semi-rigid, closed-cell, polyethylene foam; wherein each strip in one foam layer is laid astride the adjoining edges of a pair of strips in the other foam layer. The strips of foam are bonded together and to the undersurface of the bottom ply by strips of fused polyethylene.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2008Publication date: March 19, 2009Inventors: Claude J. Patent number: 7430834Abstract: The membrane cover has fold lines therein intersecting the walls of the reservoir at intersection points. A geometric chord or secant joins two intersection points, and defines, with a portion of the walls of the reservoir, a static segment in the membrane cover. The membrane cover in the static segment is tensioned along lines of force that are parallel to or that make acute angles, with the aforesaid chord or secant. The membrane cover in the static segment remains substantially planar and stationary, thus static, despite the rising and lowering of the remaining portion of the cover in response to variations in the level of the content of the reservoir. A hatchway is mounted in the static segment of the cover. In another aspect of the invention, the hatchway has an airtight compartment extending between the membrane cover and a point below the level of the material inside the reservoir.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2005Date of Patent: October 7, 2008Assignee: Geomembrane Technologies Inc.Inventor: Claude J. Patent number: 7309431Abstract: In a covered wastewater reservoir, a gas passage is defined under the membrane cover and along the sides of the reservoir. An accumulation of bio-gases is held captive between the membrane cover and the liquid surface in a central region of the reservoir relative to the gas passage, by a flap-valve attachment condition extending between the accumulation of bio-gases and the gas passage. The new method for breaking this flap-valve attachment condition and for allowing bio-gases to flow from the accumulation of bio-gases toward the gas passage, consists of periodically and momentarily increasing a pressure in the gas passage to equal or to slightly exceed a pressure in the accumulation of bio-gases. In another aspect, the membrane cover is provided with a stiff and rough-surfaced bottom layer to facilitate the breaking of flap-valve attachment conditions when the pressure under the cover is made equal everywhere.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2005Date of Patent: December 18, 2007Inventor: Claude J. Patent number: 6612079Abstract: In the present invention, there is provided a removable cover for retaining off-gases inside a clarifier. The cover comprises trusses extending across the clarifier and a flexible sheet laid across the trusses. Structural angles enclose the clarifier and constitute a kick plate on the walkways around the clarifier for improving the safety of workers. One side of the flexible sheet is permanently affixed to a first wall of the clarifier. A series of pullers are mounted inside the structural angles for pulling and releasably sealing the three other sides of the flexible sheet against the outmost trusses and against a second wall of the clarifier opposite the first wall. Each puller has a cable-deflector bar extending substantially at a same level as a mounting surface of the puller for increasing an angle of downward pull on the flexible sheet. The flexible sheet is rolled-up along the trusses to expose machinery inside the clarifier.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2002Date of Patent: September 2, 2003Inventors: Claude J. DeGarie, Brent M. Howe, Brian R. MacLean

Patent number: 6497533Abstract: A membrane cover is mounted at the surface of a wastewater reservoir. The membrane cover has a flexible buoyant impermeable membrane affixed to the perimeter walls of the reservoir and loosely laid over the wastewater level inside the reservoir. An array of weight lines is anchored to the perimeter walls and is loosely laid over the impermeable membrane. The array of weight lines defines a rectangular herringbone pattern. An array of drains is also provided. Each drain is disposed along one of the lateral weight lines. The membrane cover also comprises an array of troughs formed therein under the array of weight lines. A water ballast having the continuous herringbone pattern is contained within the troughs. Because of this water ballast, the membrane cover is kept taut and stable during a rainstorm and a surface thereof exposed to uplifting wind forces is minimized.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2002Date of Patent: December 24, 2002Inventor: Claude J. Patent number: 6338169Abstract: The floating cover has a floating grid anchored to the perimeter walls of the reservoir, and floats over the liquid level inside the reservoir. The floating grid comprises a flexible keel member and an array of flexible buoyant beams affixed to the keel member. A flexible impermeable membrane is affixed to the perimeter wall and is loosely laid over the floating grid. An array of flexible weight lines is anchored to the perimeter walls and is loosely laid over the impermeable membrane. Each weight line is laid at about halfway between an adjacent pair of buoyant beams. The floating grid, the impermeable membrane and the array of weight lines constitute three separate layers that are movable relative to each other without generating destructive stress in the impermeable membrane.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2000Date of Patent: January 15, 2002Inventor: Claude J. Patent number: 6324792Abstract: The clarifier cover has a shape defined by a low profile circular segment of revolution around the central column of the clarifier, for maintaining the volume of gas thereunder minimum. In another aspect, the support structure of the cover is made of a plurality of ring trusses disposed in a circular array and defining a circle, concentric with the circular wall of the clarifier, and a radial array of outer trusses each having an outside end mounted to the wall of the clarifier and an inside end mounted to the plurality of ring trusses. A series of inner trusses are individually affixed in an overhung mode to one of the outer trusses, such that the loading applied to the central column of a clarifier by the cover structure is minimal or negligible. The trusses define an array of triangular frame sectors.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2000Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Inventor: Claude J. DeGarie
