    Abstract: A main steam relief valve for use in a nuclear power plant. The valve disc includes a cylindrical first end of uniform external and internal circumference, a conical opposite end, an external surface, and an internal surface. The cylindrical first end preferably includes a plurality of groves on the external surface to prevent rotation of the disc. The conical portion is highly polished on the external surface to prevent the formation of cracks and is adapted to receive a push-rod on the internal surface and a valve seat on the external surface. The valve disc is constructed of approximately of 90% or greater silicon carbide.
