  • Patent number: 7783668
Abstract: A search system and method are provided that uses taxonomies, entities, facets, and ontologies to provide a user with a more comprehensive set of search results in response to a query. The search system has an indexing engine that performs one or more indexing steps that permit the search engine to return a comprehensive set of search results. For example, the indexing engine may index a document according to a set of synsets so that the search engine may use the synsets, during retrieval of results to a query, to return a more comprehensive set of search results.

  • Publication number: 20100077001
Abstract: A search system and method for uncovering unexpected links between different concepts related to a user's query during a search comprise a semantic indexing server, which builds a faceted classification index of text objects, and a query server, which receives and analyzes the user's query. A query thus processed is then sent from the query server to the semantic indexing server through an interface in order to perform a search in the faceted classification index. The search system and method further comprise a result handler, which provides the user with a search result set comprising a list of unexpected links and a list of result elements. The list of unexpected links corresponds to filters which allow the user to narrow down or refine the original query.

  • Publication number: 20100076984
Abstract: A system and method for query expansion allows the refinement and expansion of a keyword query search by combining a key concept with semantically related concepts proposed by the system and associated with that key concept. The semantically related concepts may be grouped together in a cluster, which is then presented to the user in the form of a tooltip. Once a semantically related concept is selected from the cluster, a new search is launched. This new search may use as query terms the combination of at least part of the key concept and the selected semantically related concept to thereby expand the original search.

  • Patent number: 7113954
Abstract: A system and method for generating a taxonomy is provided in which the taxonomy is generated based on clusters of phrases and a topical library. The taxonomy permits a user of a text processing system to rapidly search through a database and find relevant documents since the classifications in the taxonomy are narrow enough to limit the number of documents classified in each of the classifications.

  • Patent number: 6424982
Abstract: A parsing system and method are provided in which the break characters in the document are used to rapidly parse the document and extract one or more key phrases from the document which characterize the document. The break characters in the document may include explicit break characters, such as punctuation, soft stop words and hard stop words. The determination of which phrases in the document are extracted depends upon the type of break character appearing after the phrase in the document.

  • Patent number: 5963965
Abstract: A content-based system and method for text processing and retrieval is provided wherein a plurality of pieces of text are processed based on content to generate an index for each piece of text, the index comprising a list of phrases that represent the content of the piece of text. The phrases are grouped together to generate clusters based on a degree of relationship of the phrases, and a hierarchical structure is generated, the hierarchical structure comprising a plurality of maps, each map corresponding to a predetermined degree of relationship, the map graphically depicting the clusters at the predetermined degree of relationship, and comprising a plurality of nodes, each node representing a cluster, and a plurality of links connecting nodes that are related. The map is displayed to a user, a user selects a particular cluster on the map, and a portion of text is extracted from said pieces of text based on the cluster selected by the user.
