  • Patent number: 10107180
Abstract: A supercharged internal combustion engine includes at least two exhaust-gas turbochargers arranged in series, wherein a first exhaust-gas turbocharger serves as a low-pressure stage and a second exhaust-gas turbocharger serves as a high-pressure stage. A second turbine of the second exhaust-gas turbocharger may be present upstream of a first turbine of the first exhaust-gas turbocharger, and a second compressor of the second exhaust-gas turbocharger may be arranged in an intake system downstream of a first compressor of the first exhaust-gas turbocharger and a first bypass line may branch off upstream of the second turbine and join back at a junction point between the first turbine and the second turbine.

  • Patent number: 9989020
Abstract: Embodiments of an internal combustion engine are provided. In one example, an engine includes at least one cylinder, an intake system for supplying charge air to the at least one cylinder, an exhaust-gas discharge system for discharging exhaust gas from the at least one cylinder, a first exhaust-gas turbocharger including a first turbine arranged in the exhaust-gas discharge system and a first compressor arranged in the intake system; and an exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system. The EGR system includes a line which branches off from the exhaust-gas discharge system and opens into the intake system, a second exhaust-gas turbocharger comprising an EGR turbine arranged in the line on a shaft and an EGR compressor arranged in the line on the shaft upstream of said EGR turbine, and an EGR cooler positioned between the EGR turbine and the EGR compressor.

  • Patent number: 9739213
Abstract: A system and methods are described for a turbocharged engine, comprising powering the engine using a first operating cylinder, supplementing the power using a second switchable cylinder, deactivating the second switchable cylinder responsive to a load below a first threshold, and closing a first shut-off valve downstream of a compressor during the partial deactivation to prevent a first turbocharger from imparting a delivery action into a second compressor during the partial deactivation. Embodiments are further described wherein a bypass line in a second exhaust line further serves as a short-circuit line to prevent the second compressor from imparting a delivery action against the closed first shut-off valve. A variable valve timing is then included to further optimize the combustion process during the partial deactivation.

  • Patent number: 9644575
Abstract: The system and methods described allow for reduce emissions by using a recirculation device within an engine that connects an air feed line to an exhaust line while cooling the exhaust-gas to form a condensate for further cooling the engine system. In one particular example, a cooling unit is described that cools the exhaust-gas stream flowing there through and collects a condensate out of the exhaust-gas stream for injection back into the air feed line via an injecting device. In this way, an injection of water may be made to reduce NOx emissions during vehicle operations, and the outlay for storage of water on board the vehicle may be eliminated.
