The salicylic acid, optionally substituted salicylic acid and/or derivatives thereof serve as skin penetration enhancer for the ascorbic acid and/or derivatives thereof into human skin. The compositions are especially useful as skin lightening agents, anti-acne agents or anti-ageing agents.
