  • Patent number: 4161398
Abstract: A copper-nickel alloy is remelted to form high quality ingots or slabs which are capable of undergoing hot-working in the "as cast" form by electroslag remelting the alloy under a flux composition prepared by fusing a mixture consisting essentially of from about 35% to about 75% barium fluoride and from about 25% to about 65% calcium fluoride, by weight.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 8, 1978
Date of Patent: July 17, 1979
    Assignee: Allegheny Ludlum Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Joseph W. Tommaney, Claudia J. Burton
  • Patent number: 4161399
Abstract: A manganese-copper-nickel alloy is remelted to form high quality ingots or slabs which are capable of undergoing hot-working in the "as cast" form by electroslag remelting the alloy under a flux composition prepared by fusing a mixture consisting essentially of from about 50% to about 85% barium fluoride and from about 15% to about 50% calcium fluoride, by weight.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 8, 1978
Date of Patent: July 17, 1979
    Assignee: Allegheny Ludlum Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Joseph W. Tommaney, Claudia J. Burton
  • Patent number: 4049470
Abstract: A process for producing a low iron nickel base superalloy having a very low selenium content. The process includes the steps of: preparing a superalloy melt containing, by weight, at least 60% nickel, no more than 1% iron, and more than 0.0004% selenium; maintaining the melt in contact with a calcium and/or magnesium bearing substance for a period of time sufficient to allow for reaction between selenium and calcium and/or magnesium, and a lowering of said melt's selenium content to a level below 0.0003%, said selenium removal being carried out in a substantially oxygen free atmosphere; casting the melt; and heat treating the cast metal.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 29, 1976
Date of Patent: September 20, 1977
    Assignee: Special Metals Corporation
