  • Patent number: 7693648
Abstract: A method of detecting an assembly condition, such as, for example, a misassembly, of an exhaust aftertreatment system of a machine includes a step of executing an aftertreatment assembly diagnostic algorithm. The executing step includes detecting an electronic identification feature of an aftertreatment component of the exhaust aftertreatment system, and comparing the electronic identification feature to an expected value.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 27, 2007
Date of Patent: April 6, 2010
    Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.
Inventors: Jeffrey D. Klein, Richard Thompson, Timothy Davis, Clayton Walenta, Michael S. Thornton

  • Publication number: 20070151230
Abstract: A method for controlling exhaust emissions is disclosed. The method includes producing exhaust having hydrocarbons and directing the exhaust through a converter. The method also includes directing the exhaust from the converter to an environment and determining a first rate indicative of a rate of hydrocarbons directed to the environment. The method further includes comparing the first rate with a predetermined rate and adjusting the production of exhaust, if the first rate is greater than the predetermined rate.

  • Publication number: 20070100536
Abstract: A control system for an engine having a combustion chamber is disclosed. The control system has a first sensor, a second sensor, and a third sensor. The first sensor generates a signal indicative of ambient air pressure. The second sensor generates a signal indicative of the pressure of air entering the combustion chamber. The third sensor generates a signal indicative of a speed of the engine. The control system also has a controller configured to reference a first map to determine a first fuel limit value based on the pressure of air entering the combustion chamber and the speed of the engine, reference a second map to determine a second fuel limit value based on the pressure of air entering the combustion chamber and the speed of the engine, and determine a third fuel limit value based on the first and second fuel limit values and the ambient air pressure.
