Patent number: 9620923Abstract: A device for laterally coupling pump light into a fiber. A fiber runs in a longitudinal direction, having an optically active medium to be pumped and a lateral wall running approximately in the longitudinal direction, and at least one light coupler, at least some part of which runs parallel to the fiber along the lateral wall. The light coupler is an optical waveguide which is optically coupled to the fiber such that pump light propagating in the optical waveguide can be coupled into the fiber via the lateral wall. The efficiency of the pump light coupling is improved by a plurality of windings of the fiber being located alternately with waveguides on a substrate. The pump light can be coupled into all waveguides simultaneously, for example by a prism.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2014Date of Patent: April 11, 2017Assignee: Rosenberger Hochfrequenztechnik GmbH & Co. KGInventors: Benjamin Weigand, Christian Theobald, Johannes Albert L'huillier, Clemens Wurster

Patent number: 9239143Abstract: An aviation obstruction lighting system having a lamp mounted on the an aviation obstruction at an elevation sufficiently high to serve as a warning of the presence of the obstruction to pilots of approaching aircraft, a remote light source, and an optical waveguide connecting the lamp and the light source and conducting light from the light source to the lamp. The optical waveguide contains quartz glass fibers. The light source is mounted at an elevation to be manually accessible by a technician standing on, or on a platform less than two meters from, the ground. The lamp includes an optical waveguide end receiver, and a Fresnel lens surrounding a reflective element having a conical or frustoconical surface positioned to intercept and reflect light emanating from an optical waveguide, such that the reflected light is directed to an inner incident surface of the Fresnel lens.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 2012Date of Patent: January 19, 2016Assignee: ROSENBERGER-OSI GMBH & CO. OHGInventors: Clemens Wurster, Casey Frederick, Mark Frederick

Patent number: 9182549Abstract: An optical coupling system for coupling a first optical waveguide having a first core surrounded by a first sheath to a second optical waveguide having a second core surrounded by a second sheath. An end face of the first core of the first optical waveguide abuts an end face of the second core of the second optical waveguide at a coupling location and the second core is flush with the first core in the axial direction, wherein, in the region of the coupling location, over at least part of a predetermined axial portion, both the second sheath of the second optical waveguide and the first sheath of the first optical waveguide together form a cladding of the optical waveguide in the predetermined portion.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2012Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignees: Rosenberger-OSI GmbH & CO. OHG, AT&S AGInventors: Clemens Wurster, Gregor Langer, Stefan Schmidt, Hannes Stahr
