Patent number: 8849603Abstract: A method of testing a component of a mobile platform without using an aircraft control system of the mobile platform, where the component forms a part of the aircraft control system. The method may involve using a test controller independent of the aircraft control system to initiate a test operation. The test operation is used to generate a test signal. The test signal is applied to a test subsystem carried on the mobile platform but operable independent of the aircraft control system. The test subsystem is used to act on the component of the aircraft control system. A response of the component may then be evaluated.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2008Date of Patent: September 30, 2014Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Clete M. Boldrin, Ali R. Mansouri, John L. Vian

Patent number: 8128036Abstract: Methods and apparatus for controlling the attitude of a mobile platform with a resolution suitable for vernier attitude control. In one embodiment a method includes flowing fluid through an orifice of an aerodynamic surface. The method also includes modifying a boundary layer of the aerodynamic surface with the flowing fluid. Another embodiment provides an aerodynamic member of a mobile platform. The aerodynamic member includes an aerodynamic surface, an orifice, an actuator, and a fluid moving member. The orifice is in the aerodynamic surface and the actuator is subject to friction and backlash. The fluid moving member communicates with the orifice and causes the fluid to flow through the orifice to modify the boundary layer of aerodynamic surface.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2007Date of Patent: March 6, 2012Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Clete M. Boldrin, Ahmed A. Hassan

Patent number: 4800798Abstract: A dual redundant servomechanism for moving aircraft control surfaces is disclosed. The servomechanism is of the type whose input commands, from the pilot of the aircraft, are transmitted electrically. Force fight, which is associated with such dual servomechanisms when they are connected to a common aircraft control surface, is minimized. This is accomplished by providing the control system for each servomechanism with input signals which are electrically summed. Each control system includes electrical transducers which provide a signal indicative of actuator position and the pressure associated with the hydraulic motor used in each servomechanism.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1984Date of Patent: January 31, 1989Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Clete M. Boldrin, Richard D. McCorkle, Jimmy W. Rice, James J. Rustik
