  • Patent number: 4587371
Abstract: A process for the alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons in a reaction zone containing a crystalline silica polymorph silicalite catalyst. The feed stock to the reaction zone comprises an alkylating agent and an aromatic substrate contains sulfur in an amount, greater than 2 ppm, which heretofore has considered to be unacceptable to zeolite catalysts. A steam cofeed may also be applied to the reaction zone in an amount sufficient to reduce the deposition of coke on the catalyst due to the presence of sulfur. Sulfur may be present as a contaminant in the aromatic substrate or the alkylating agent.

  • Patent number: 4520220
Abstract: A process for alkylating aromatic substrates is disclosed which includes contacting the aromatic substrate with an alkylating agent in a reaction zone at temperatures of from about 350.degree. C. to about 500.degree. C. in the presence of a crystalline silica polymorph silicalite catalyst material.

  • Patent number: 4490570
Abstract: A process for the selective alkylation of a monoalkyl benzene in which the alkyl substituent is either methyl or ethyl, to yield a dialkylbenzene product in which the para isomer of the disubstituted product is present in a concentration greater than in a thermodynamic equilibrium is provided. The method essentially comprises passing the monoalkyl benzene and an alkylating agent capable of methylation or ethylation through a reaction zone containing a crystalline silica polymorph silicalite catalyst. Water, in the form of steam, can be co-fed as an option.

  • Patent number: 4489214
Abstract: A process for suppressing production of ortho isomers during catalytic alkylation of monoalkylbenzenes which comprises contacting the aromatic substrate with an alkylating agent in the presence of a crystalline silica polymorph silicalite catalyst material.

  • Patent number: 4417085
Abstract: A process for the production of vinyltoluene, comprising the steps of: producing a crude vinyltoluene product by the catalytic dehydrogenation of ethyltoluene; removing compounds from the crude vinyltoluene product which have a higher molecular weight than vinyltoluene to form a prepurified crude vinyltoluene product; and fractionally distilling the prepurified crude vinyltoluene product in a distillation apparatus to recover purified vinyltoluene. The higher molecular weight compounds removed are compounds which foster the conversion of vinyltoluene into cross-linked polymer. The compounds removed preferably have more than 11 carbon atoms. In one embodiment, the step of removing higher molecular weight compounds comprises condensing a vaporous crude vinyltoluene product to form a crude vinyltoluene solution, and subjecting the crude vinyltoluene solution to flash distillation to form a vaporous prepurified crude vinyltoluene product.

  • Patent number: 4400570
Abstract: A process for producing ethylbenzene by catalytic alkylation employing a TEA-silicate catalyst material and steam co-feed are described. Excellent conversion, selectivity and xylene suppression can be obtained under vapor phase alkylation conditions during production of ethylbenzene using TEA-silicate catalysts and steam co-feed.

  • Patent number: 4387260
Abstract: A process and apparatus for alkylating aromatic compounds with silicalite alkylation catalysts in the presence of an effective amount of water which extends the cycle length of the reaction by decreasing the rate of activity loss of the catalyst and decreases the production of unwanted by-products.
