  • Patent number: 5436379
Abstract: Fully synthetic lubricating base oil compositions are formulated from blends of 50-97 wt % of synthetic hydrocarbons and 3-30 wt % isobutylene oligomers. The lubricating base oil composition have constant viscosity indexes which are higher than those of the components used to form the compositions. The synthetic hydrocarbon and isobutylene oligomers are combinable in various amounts with conventional additives to form multi-grade engine lubricants, which are shear stable.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 14, 1994
Date of Patent: July 25, 1995
    Assignee: Pennzoil Products Company
Inventors: William J. Heilman, Clifford G. Venier
  • Patent number: 5210351
Abstract: Cyclopentadienes are alkylated by initially reacting primary or secondary alcohols at elevated temperatures in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide with removal of water to form dimers of said primary or secondary alcohols, and thereafter reacting said alcohol dimers with a cyclopentadiene to alkylate said cyclopentadiene.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 4, 1991
Date of Patent: May 11, 1993
    Assignee: Pennzoil Products Company
Inventors: Clifford G. Venier, Edward W. Casserly

  • Patent number: 5144095
Abstract: Tertiary alkyl substituted cyclopentadienes are prepared by reaction of cyclopentadiene with a stoichiometric excess of a tertiary alkyl halide under phase transfer conditions. The tertiary-alkyl substituted cyclopentadienes are useful as synthetic lubricants.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 25, 1991
Date of Patent: September 1, 1992

Inventors: Clifford G. Venier, Edward W. Casserly
  • Patent number: 5012022
Abstract: Hydrocarbyl substituted cyclopentadienes, cyclopentenes, and cyclopentanes and synthetic lubricating compositions. The preferred structures contain 1 to 6 alkyl groups which have 4 to 36 carbon atoms and may have different and varying carbon chain structures. The cyclopentenes and cyclopentanes are prepared by hydrogenation from the corresponding cyclopentadiene intermediates. The cyclopentadienes are prepared by reaction with hydrocarbylating agents or alcohols. Mixtures are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4721823
Abstract: Hydrocarbyl substituted cyclopentadienes, cyclopentenes, and cyclopentanes are sythetic lubricating compositions.

  • Patent number: 4497636
Abstract: A process for the removal of divalent organic and inorganic sulfur compounds from coal and other carbonaceous material. A slurry of pulverized carbonaceous material is contacted with an electrophilic oxidant which selectively oxidizes the divalent organic and inorganic compounds to trivalent and tetravalent compounds. The carbonaceous material is then contacted with a molten caustic which dissolves the oxidized sulfur compounds away from the hydrocarbon matrix.
