Patent number: 5827209Abstract: An automatic feedback and adjustment setup is integrally connected to a body joint support. The support may be of the flexible, semi-rigid, or rigid type. The support contains one or more inflatable/deflatable bladders, each bladder individually controlled by a hydraulic pump. Sensors embedded in the support monitor muscle activity (EMG) and transmit those electronic measurements to a microprocessor which processes the measurements according to one of a variety of prestored algorithms. The result of this processing is compared to preset minimum and maximum levels. The inflation level of each bladder is then automatically adjusted by activating the hydraulic pumps to keep the calculated level between these preset minimum and maximum. The combination of support, bladders, sensors, microprocessor, comparison device, and hydraulic pumps creates a closed-looped biofeedback system for controlling the degree of joint stress the person is experiencing while wearing the support.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1996Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: BCAM International, Inc.Inventor: Clifford M. Patent number: 5687099Abstract: An apparatus for supporting a body portion in a preferred embodiment has a plurality n of inflatable members M.sub.i (i=1, . . . , n) in a desired configuration. Each member is individually adjustable to a desired pressure from a pressure source. The apparatus also has a pressure-sensing arrangement for sensing the pressure in each of the members M.sub.i. Furthermore the apparatus has a control arrangement for adjusting the pressure in the members M.sub.i according to a protocol. The protocol includes the steps of(i) initially inflating each member M.sub.i until a predetermined condition has been achieved;(ii) determining the pressure P.sub.Oj (j=i) of each member M.sub.i resulting after initial inflation;(iii) determining the desired pressure P.sub.Di of each member M.sub.i as a function F.sub.i of the pressures P.sub.Oj (j=1, . . . n) obtained in step (ii), such that P.sub.Di =F.sub.i (P.sub.01, . . . , P.sub.Dn); and(iv) adjusting the pressure of each member M.sub.i to a final pressure P.sub.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1995Date of Patent: November 11, 1997Inventors: Clifford M. Patent number: 5283735Abstract: An electronic system for adjusting a load bearing surface such as a chair or bed to provide a desired level of comfort includes an array of pressure sensors located within the load bearing surface. The pressure sensors generate data indicating the actual distribution of pressure exerted by a user on the load bearing surface. An electronic processor processes the data generated by the array of pressure senors. The processor compares the fraction of total load exerted on each of a plurality of regions of the load bearing surface with a desired range for each region. If the fraction of total load for any region is not within the desired range, a servo-mechanism is activated to change the shape of the load bearing surface so that the fraction of total load on each region is within the desired range, so as to provide a desired level of comfort to the user.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1992Date of Patent: February 1, 1994Assignee: Biomechanics Corporation of AmericaInventors: Clifford M. Gross, Jose Banaag, Ravi Goonetilleke, Chandra Nair

Patent number: 5093996Abstract: A scissors which may be utilized by persons having weakened hand muscles is disclosed. The scissors comprises first and second blade elements. Each of the blade elements includes a front portion having a sharp cutting edge, a middle portion and a rear portion. The blade elements are pivotally mounted at the rear portions thereof and biased by a spring member towards the open position of the scissors. First and second handles are attached to the middle portions of the first and second blade elements, respectively. The handles increase the effective widths of the middle portions of the blade elements thereby increasing the mechanical advantage of the scissors. This permits a user of the scissors to close the scissors with a smaller force.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1990Date of Patent: March 10, 1992Assignee: Biomechanics Corporation of AmericaInventor: Clifford M. Patent number: 5060174Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for evaluating a load bearing surface such as a seat. Preferred apparatus for the practice of the invention comprises a plurality of sensors which are distributed across a load bearing surface such as a seat pan, apparatus for measuring the pressures exerted on the sensors when a weight is placed on the load bearing surface, and signal processing apparatus for evaluating the pressures that are measured. Advantageously, the signal processing apparatus can be utilized to store data which represents a comfort level for the load bearing surface and to evaluate the measured pressures in light of that data. For example, the data stored can be pressure measurements for a series of seats correlated with subjective appraisals of seat comfort and the evaluation can be performed by statistical analysis and comparison of the pressure measurements for a seat under test with the stored pressure measurements.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1990Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Assignee: Biomechanics Corporation of AmericaInventor: Clifford M.
