  • Patent number: 4927620
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an improved pitch for making readily stabilizable, substantially nonmesophasic carbon fibers. The pitch has a softening point of about 250.degree. C. (480.degree. F.) or above and is produced from an unoxidized thermal petroleum pitch by selectively reducing or eliminating a portion of the low molecular weight materials in a very short period of time so that the tendency to produce mesophase pitch is eliminated or reduced and so that the chemical integrity of the components of the higher molecular weight fractions is preserved as much as possible. Also disclosed is a method of producing carbon fibers therefrom and rovings or mats from such fibers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 21, 1985
Date of Patent: May 22, 1990
    Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.
Inventors: Clifford Ward, Eugene Chao, Roy E. Booth, Frank H. Turrill, Robert H. Wombles, John W. Newman, William P. Hettinger, Jr.

  • Patent number: 4409092
Abstract: A combination process for upgrading hydrocarbon fractions obtained from raw shale oil, oil products of coal processing and select fractions of crude oils comprising sulfur, nitrogen and metal contaminants to produce jet fuel product fractions such as JP4, JP5, JP8 and other turbine-type fuel materials provided. The combination of integrated processing steps involving hydrotreating, acid extraction of basic nitrogen compounds and hydrofining thereof to produce a feed composition suitable for catalytic reforming in the absence of significant hydrocracking whereby jet fuel boiling range material is produced significantly reduces by the combination the hydrogen requirements of the process.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 1, 1981
Date of Patent: October 11, 1983
    Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.
Inventors: Charles A. Johnson, Clifford Ward, Howard F. Moore, Jr. Hettinger
  • Patent number: 4382855
Abstract: Removal of hydroxy-substituted and/or mercapto-substituted-hydrocarbons from coal liquids which comprises contacting the coal liquids with an aqueous composition containing an alkanolamine, thereby providing a two-phase mixture, and then separating the mixture into an aqueous extract phase and a naphtha rich raffinate phase.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 28, 1981
Date of Patent: May 10, 1983
    Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.
Inventors: Clifford Ward, Charles A. Johnson, III
  • Patent number: 4243551
Abstract: Disclosed is a catalyst and method for converting mercaptans and mercaptide compounds in aqueous alkaline solution to disulfides. Catalytic agent is a metal complex synthesized from 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride and converted to either the alkali metal salt or to the acid form. The method for oxidizing the mercaptide compounds comprises contacting mercaptans and mercaptide compounds in aqueous alkaline solution with air in the presence of the catalyst and subsequently separating alkaline solution from the resultant disulfide compounds.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 4, 1978
Date of Patent: January 6, 1981
    Assignee: Ashland Oil, Inc.
