  • Publication number: 20100023028
Abstract: A tissue fastener assembly delivers a fastener for deployment. The assembly includes a fastener including a first member, a second member, the first and second members having first and second ends, and a flexible connecting member fixed to each of the first and second members intermediate the first and second ends and extending between the first and second members. The first member has a longitudinal axis and a through channel along the axis. The assembly further includes a deployment wire slidingly received within the through channel of the first member that pierces into the tissue and guides the first member through the tissue, a guide structure defining a lumen that receives the fastener and deployment wire and guides the deployment wire and fastener to the tissue, and a fastener configuration structure that orientates the second member in a predetermined position relative to the first member within the lumen for dependable deployment.

  • Patent number: 7651461
Abstract: A jacket of biological compatible material has an internal volume dimensioned for an apex of the heart to be inserted into the volume and for the jacket to be slipped over the heart. The jacket has a longitudinal dimension between upper and lower ends sufficient for the jacket to surround a lower portion of the heart with the jacket surrounding a valvular annulus of the heart and further surrounding the lower portion to cover at least the ventricular lower extremities of the heart. The jacket is adapted to be secured to the heart with the jacket surrounding at least the valvular annulus and the ventricular lower extremities. The jacket is adjustable on the heart to snugly conform to an external geometry of the heart and assume a maximum adjusted volume for the jacket to constrain circumferential expansion of the heart beyond the maximum adjusted volume during diastole and to permit unimpeded contraction of the heart during systole.

  • Patent number: 7615000
Abstract: A resection device and method permits safe and efficient encapsulation, isolation and resection of body tissue. The device includes a sheath of flexible and severable material configured to receive the body tissue to be resectioned as it is drawn therein. The sheath may be expandable and held in an expanded condition as the body tissue to be resectioned is drawn into the sheath. Thereafter, the sheath is permitted to collapse about the body tissue to contain and constrict the body tissue. Once the body tissue to be resectioned is disposed in the sheath, the sheath is severed to resection the body tissue.

  • Publication number: 20090234321
Abstract: Visualization of a medical procedure to be performed in a coronary vessel (such as a coronary sinus) of a patient is achieved by the steps of: identifying a coronary vessel for a procedure and placing a catheter within the coronary vessel. The coronary vessel is occluded at a site proximal to a distal end of the catheter. A contrast medium is injected into the coronary vessel through the catheter distal end for visualization of the procedure within the coronary vessel. Following the procedure, the contrast medium is removed through the catheter distal end and occlusion of the coronary vessel is discontinued.

  • Publication number: 20080288060
Abstract: In a method of treating valvular insufficiency in a patient, a plurality of filaments (2) are used to engage tissue at spaced apart locations of an annulus (1) of the valve being treated. The engaged filaments (2) are drawn inward so as to draw the engaged tissue around the valve annulus (1) inward. The filaments (2) are then secured with the engaged tissue in the drawn-in configuration. Inward drawing of the engaged tissue improves valve function by reducing the valve annulus (1). Alternatively or additionally, anchor means may be used to secure the filaments to a region of robust tissue, thus drawing the engaged tissue toward the anchor means to further improve valve function.

  • Publication number: 20080119866
Abstract: An intra-bronchial device may be placed and anchored in an air passageway of a patient to collapse a lung portion associated with the air passageway. The device includes an obstructing member that prevents air from being inhaled into the lung portion, and an anchor that anchors the obstruction device within the air passageway. The anchor may piercingly engage the air passageway wall. The anchor may be releasable from the air passageway for removal of the obstructing member. The anchor may be releasable by collapsing a portion of the obstructing member, or by drawing the obstructing member toward the larynx. The obstructing member may be a one-way valve.

  • Patent number: 7351200
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a cardiac reinforcement device (CRD) and method for the treatment of cardiomyopathy. The CRD provides for reinforcement of the walls of the heart by constraining cardiac expansion, beyond a predetermined limit, during diastolic expansion of the heart. A CRD of the invention can be applied to the epicardium of the heart to locally constrain expansion of the cardiac wall or to circumferentially constrain the cardiac wall during cardiac expansion.
