Publication number: 20060208579Abstract: A parasitic power collection system is described that collects energy from the motion of the user of a wearable portable printer, or vehicle motion in the case of vehicle-mounted portable printer. It uses that collected energy to assist in recharging the battery of the portable printer and thus extend its operating life. Two embodiments are discussed which can be mounted inside the portable printer. Both embodiments use the motion a string of separated high magnetic flux NdFeB permanent magnets inside a set of induction coils to generate electricity. In the first embodiment, a line of magnets collects motion by acting as an oscillating pendulum captured in tube wound with induction coils. In the second embodiment, the magnets are arranged as a ring rotor floating inside a set of toroidal induction coils to generate electricity as the rotor moves in reaction to body or vehicle motion.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 16, 2006Publication date: September 21, 2006Inventor: Clive Hohberger

Publication number: 20050237155Abstract: An electronic radio frequency (RF) identification system 10 is disclosed and claimed. The system includes an interrogator 11 and a plurality of RF transponders 12.1 to 12.n. In use, each transponder is operative in response to an interrogation signal 14 to respond with a forward error correctable data message 16.1 including base data encoded as symbol characters in accordance with a forward error correcting code, such as a Reed Solomon Code, and check characters on the base data as defined in the forward error correcting code. The interrogator 11 utilizes data relating to the forward error correcting code, the symbol characters and check characters in the received forward error correctable data message, to reconstruct the base data in the event of corruption of the forward error correctable data message during transmission.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 24, 2005Publication date: October 27, 2005Applicant: ZIH Corp., A Delaware CorporationInventors: Clive Hohberger, Christopher Gordon Turner

Publication number: 20050092838Abstract: A system having an RFID transceiver is adapted to communicate exclusively with a single RFID transponder located in a predetermined confined transponder target area. The system includes a magnetic coupling device comprising a magnetic flux generator responsive to a radio frequency input signal and a magnetic field pattern former. The pattern former is configured to collect flux produced by the flux generator and to form a field pattern in the location of the transponder target area. The system establishes, at predetermined transceiver power levels, a mutual magnetic coupling which is selective exclusively for a single transponder located in the transponder target area.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 19, 2004Publication date: May 5, 2005Applicant: ZIH CORP., A DELAWARE CORPORATION WITH ITS PRINCIPInventors: Boris Tsirline, Clive Hohberger, Robert Gawelczyk

Publication number: 20050045723Abstract: A system having a UHF RFID transceiver is adapted to communicate exclusively with a single electro-magnetically coupled transponder located in a predetermined confined transponder operating region. The system includes a near field coupling device comprising a plurality of lines connected in parallel with an unmatched load. The near field coupling device may be formed, for example on a printed circuit board with a plurality of electrically interconnected traces and a ground plane. The system establishes, at predetermined transceiver power levels, a mutual electro-magnetic coupling which is selective exclusively for a single transponder located in a defined transponder operating region. Also included are methods for selective communication with the transponder in an apparatus such as a printer-encoder.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 29, 2003Publication date: March 3, 2005Applicant: ZIH CORP.Inventors: Boris Tsirline, Clive Hohberger, Robert Gawelczyk, Daniel Donato

Publication number: 20050025553Abstract: A a thermal transfer media printer is disclosed. In one embodiment, the printer selectively programs RFID transponders, and then embeds them into conventional on-demand printed media between the adhesive layer and the release liner. Selective configuration of each printed media sample by addition of value-adding elements may be performed independently for each media sample, under software control during processing of each media sample format print control program. An add-on mechanism is disclosed that can be operatively attached to a conventional media printer. This allows RFID transponder labels to be selectively applied at precise locations on the printed surface of on-demand printed media in connection with existing printers.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 9, 2004Publication date: February 3, 2005Applicant: ZIH Corp.Inventors: Clive Hohberger, Matthew Ream, Daniel Donato
