    Abstract: A bi-directional optical transceiver which provides bi-directional translation between optical and electrical signals. The transceiver includes an LED, a photodiode, and a transimpedance preamplifier which are mounted onto a single base to provide the bi-directional translation. The photodiode receives optical signals and, in conjunction with the preamplifier, produces corresponding electrical signals, and the LED receives electrical signals and produces corresponding optical signals.
