  • Patent number: 9921282
Abstract: A method of measuring NMR response in an NMR instrument includes heating a sample at a heater temperature that is higher than the temperature of the interior of the NMR instrument, positioning the heated sample in the NMR instrument, and measuring the NMR response of the heat sample. Typically, the sample is dry and includes fat. Furthermore, a method of determining an amount of a component of a sample includes positioning a sample in an NMR instrument, applying a sequence of radio-frequency pulses to the sample, measuring the amplitudes of the signals produced by the application of the sequence of radio-frequency pulses, and determining the amount of a component in the sample using the measured amplitudes of the signals. The disclosed methods typically provide accurate analysis of samples in a shorter time period than traditional NMR techniques and solvent-based analysis techniques.

  • Patent number: 9891866
Abstract: Methods and systems are described herein to provide efficient data retrieval in a data storage system. Specifically, in cases where users of a data storage system are not overly sensitive to data retrieval time, such as the case for backup and archival data storage systems, random read requests may be fulfilled as part of sequential reads to reduce I/O operations. A data storage system may be divided into data storage zones. Sequential reads may be performed for data stored in those data storage zones with pending data retrieval requests. Data retrieval requests may be fulfilled based at least in part on the sequentially-read data.

  • Patent number: 9816039
Abstract: A heavy petroleum oil feed is upgraded by having its amenability to cracking improved by subjecting the oil to selective partial oxidation with a catalytic oxidation system to partially oxidize aromatic ring systems in the heavy oil. The partially oxidized oil can then be cracked in the conventional manner but at lower severities to lower molecular weight cracking products. The cracking following the partial oxidation step may be thermal in nature as by thermal cracking, delayed, contact or fluid coking or fluid catalytic cracking or hydrogenative as in hydrocracking.

  • Publication number: 20170024428
Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to, among other things, validating the integrity of received and/or stored data payloads. In some examples, a storage service may perform a first partitioning of a data object into first partitions based at least in part on a first operation. The storage service may also verify the data object, by utilizing a verification algorithm, to generate a first verification value. In some cases, the storage service may additionally perform a second partitioning of the data object into second partitions based at least in part on a second operation. The second partitions may be different from the first partitions. Additionally, the archival data storage service may verify the data object using the verification algorithm to generate a second verification value. Further, the storage service may determine whether the second verification value equals the first verification value.

  • Patent number: 9535736
Abstract: In this disclosure, a resource scheduler is described that allows virtual machine instances to earn resource credits during the low activity levels. Virtual machine instances that spend a predominant amount of time operating at low activity levels are able to quickly gain resource credits. Once these virtual machine instances acquire enough resource credits to surpass a threshold level, the resource scheduler can assign a high priority level to the virtual machine instances that provide them with priority access to CPU resources. The next time that the virtual machine instances enter a high activity level, they have a high priority level that allows them to preempt other, lower priority virtual machine instances. Thus, these virtual machine instances are able to process operations and/or respond to user requests with low latency.

  • Publication number: 20160355545
Abstract: A method of improving protein functionality includes obtaining a protein such as protein contained within exclusion bodies contained within bacteria or yeast used for the recombinant expression of the protein. The exclusion bodies are solubilized using a chaotropic agent such as guanidine or urea. The protein is then subject to denaturation conditions and optionally purified. A liquid containing the denatured protein is loaded into a vessel that is angled relative to horizontal. The vessel is then rotated in the angled configuration at a rate within that is less than 10,000 RPM for period of time. Refolded protein is formed by the high shear conditions formed in the thin film of fluid formed in the inner surface of the rotating vessel. Refolding can be performed in a batch mode or a continuous mode. The process may be scaled up for industrial applications by using multiple vessels.
