  • Patent number: 5729311
Abstract: An illumination system (3) includes an optical waveguide (11) and a light source (9) whose light is coupled into the optical waveguide (11) via at least one end face (13) of the optical waveguide (11). The optical waveguide (11) is provided with recesses (19) which are subsequently filled up with a material which is different from that of the optical waveguide (11). One of the two materials is isotropic and has refractive index n.sub.p and the other material is anisotropic and has refractive indices n.sub.o and n.sub.e. For the refractive indices it should hold that n.sub.o or n.sub.e is equal or substantially equal to n.sub.p in order that there is separation of polarization at the interfaces between isotropic and anisotropic material. Further, a flat-panel picture display device includes such an illumination system.

  • Patent number: 5631766
Abstract: An optical component (7) is described in which the frequency of electromagnetic radiation is raised and which comprises a non-linear optical medium and an optical modulation structure (21) so as to compensate for the wavelength dispersion in the non-linear optical material so that there is phase matching. By providing a satellite layer (15) having a high refractive index proximate to the modulation structure (21), the wavelength at which phase matching occurs is not critical for the layer thickness of the non-linear optical medium. An opto-electronic device (1) for raising the frequency of electromagnetic radiation, comprising such a component (7) as a frequency-raising element is also described.

  • Patent number: 5151965
Abstract: Device for doubling the frequency of a light wave, comprising a non-linear optical medium of an oriented synthetic resin composition for guiding a fundamental light wave, while forming a second harmonic wave, which medium is composed of a waveguide having a spatially periodic structure for phase matching. The oriented synthetic resin composition exhibits alternate regions having a mutually different second order (non-linear optical) susceptibility. Said structure can be manufactured in an efficient manner by exposing the synthetic resin composition to patterned radiation.
