  • Patent number: 6291049
Abstract: A sandwich structure including a core having opposing top and bottom surfaces, a plurality of discrete pins disposed through the core and extending beyond the top and bottom surfaces of the core, a face sheet on the top core surface, and a face sheet on the bottom core surface. The ends of each pin are bent over and lie between the respective core surfaces and the face sheets to secure the face sheets to the core, improve the strength of the core, and to provide a physical connection between the two face sheets. Also disclosed is a reinforced core for a sandwich structure which does not yet have the face sheets assembled to it. Also disclosed is a method of making such a reinforced core and completed sandwich structures including such a core.

  • Patent number: 5733404
Abstract: A translaminar reinforcement system for Z-direction reinforcement of a fiber matrix structure in which a plurality of reinforcing elements are disposed in a body of compactible material to extend in at least one direction and orientated at at least one acute angle and driven into a fiber matrix structure when the body is compacted by a compressive force.

  • Patent number: 5589015
Abstract: A method of and system for inserting reinforcing pins in a composite structure in which a number of reinforcing pins are inserted in a compressible material; the compressible material/pin combination is assembled on the composite structure; ultrasonic energy is applied to the pins; and pressure is applied simultaneously with the application of ultrasonic energy to compress the compressible material and insert the pins into the composite structure to join two laminates or reinforce a single composite structure.
