    Abstract: A method for regenerating an amine-containing sorbent material useful in CO2 capture, the method comprising exposing an amine-containing sorbent-CO2 complex to microwave radiation to result in release of CO2 and regenerated amine-containing sorbent that is uncomplexed with CO2, wherein the amine-containing sorbent-CO2 complex contains either: (i) a carbamate bond; or (ii) an ion pair bond of the formula wherein Ra, Rb, and Rc are selected from H and hydrocarbon groups containing at least one carbon atom, wherein at least one of Ra, Rb, and Rc is H; Xm? is a carbonate or bicarbonate anion, with m being 1 for bicarbonate and 2 for carbonate; and n is an integer of 1 or 2, provided that n×m=2. The method may also include re-using the regenerated amine-containing sorbent to capture carbon dioxide.

    Abstract: A method of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) present in air is provided. The method includes adding a carbon-dioxide-capturing device to a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system of a building. The carbon-dioxide-capturing device is added to one or both of an air handler and air-distribution ductwork of the HVAC system. The method further includes circulating air including carbon dioxide through the carbon-dioxide-capturing device in the HVAC system. A direct decarbonization system for capturing carbon dioxide present in air is also provided. The system includes an HVAC unit, air-distribution ductwork connected to the HVAC unit, and a carbon-dioxide-capturing device disposed in one or both of the HVAC unit and the air-distribution ductwork. Carbon dioxide gas present in air passing through the HVAC unit or the air-distribution ductwork is removable from the air by the carbon-dioxide-capturing device.

    Abstract: A solar-thermal vapor-permeation membrane is provided. The solar-thermal vapor-permeation membrane includes a thermally conductive, microporous support layer having a feed surface, and an active separation layer adjacent the feed surface of the support layer. The support layer is capable of absorbing solar-thermal radiation. Utilization of solar energy for a membrane separation process replaces fossil-fuel derived energy with renewable energy as the driving force and does not involve the generation of undesirable greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the solar-thermal vapor-permeation process using the provided membrane is cost effective, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly.

    Abstract: A method of forming a metal-carbon composite, the method comprising subjecting a precursor composition to a curing step followed by a carbonization step, the precursor composition comprising: (i) a phenolic component, (ii) a crosslinkable aldehyde component, (iii) a polymerization catalyst, and (iv) metal-containing particles, wherein said carbonization step comprises heating the precursor composition at a carbonizing temperature of at least 300° C. for sufficient time to convert the precursor composition to said metal-carbon composite. The produced metal-carbon composite, devices incorporating them, and methods of their use (e.g., in capacitive deionization and lithium ion batteries) are also described.

    Abstract: A method of forming a carbon and titanium containing composite that includes mixing a titanium-containing powder with carbon and forming the mixture of the titanium-containing-powder and carbon into a composite structure at a temperature of less than 1500° C. The forming process provides a net shape having dimensions within 90% or greater than the final shape of the product. The binder of the composite is provided by the titanium, and the dispersed phase of the composite is provided by the carbon. The carbon and titanium containing composite may be employed as in applications including capacitive deionization (CDI), gas separation, chromatography, catalysis and electrode.

    Abstract: A method for bandgap shift and phase transformation for titania structures. The method can include providing a flexible substrate, depositing a titania film onto the substrate, and exposing the titania film to one or more pulses of infrared energy of sufficient energy density and for a sufficient time to crystallize the titania film to predominantly anatase crystalline phase. The flexible substrate can be formed from a polymeric material, and the method can achieve a bandgap shift from greater than 3.0 eV to approximately 2.4 eV. The method can also include forming a crystalline titania layer over a substrate and annealing the crystalline titania layer by applying pulsed thermal energy sufficient to modify the phase constitution of the crystalline titania layer. The source of pulsed thermal energy can include an infrared flashlamp or laser, and the resulting titania structure can be used with photovoltaic and photoelectrolysis systems.
