Patent number: 7765540Abstract: A system that facilitates management of an application or service of a system using code attribution. Code of an application or service to be installed on the system is attributed with management information. The system includes a management subsystem that uses the attributed management information to manage the installed application or service.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2003Date of Patent: July 27, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Raymond W. McCollum, Corina E. Feuerstein, Mario Hewardt, Brian Reistad

Patent number: 7712085Abstract: Architecture that facilitates management of an application or service of a system. A catalog is provided that stores management information which is accessible to determine the status of the application of service. Code of the application or service to be installed on the system is attributed with management information. When installed, the application or service is processed to copy the management information into a manifest, which manifest is further stored in the catalog along with other manifests associated with different applications or services. The management information in a manifest is uniquely identified by a URI, which access to the management information is via the URI, and which leads to the associated application or service.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2004Date of Patent: May 4, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Raymond W McCollum, Corina E Feuerstein, Mario Hewardt, Brian Reistad

Patent number: 7631300Abstract: A computer-implemented method for exposing instrumentation data available from within a managed code environment to an instrumentation data source executing outside of said managed code environment is presented. The method comprises each of the following. An indication is received that said instrumentation data should be exposed to said instrumentation data source. In response to receiving said indication, a decoupled provider is loaded. The decoupled provider facilitates communication between said managed code environment and said instrumentation data source. A determination is made as to whether schema describing said instrumentation data has been previously registered with said instrumentation data source. In response to determining that said schema has not been previously registered with said instrumentation data source, said schema is registered with said instrumentation data source through said decoupled provider.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2005Date of Patent: December 8, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Travis J Muhlestein, Corina E Feuerstein, Jeffrey M Cooperstein

Patent number: 7627865Abstract: An instrumentation client API is provided within a managed code runtime environment for accessing instrumentation data that resides outside of the managed code runtime environment. The instrumentation client API provides access to instrumentation data in a manner that is consistent with the classes and models provided by the runtime environment, raises exceptions in a manner that is compatible with the runtime environment, and is secure. The instrumentation client API wraps, or translates, calls to and from an instrumentation data source external to the runtime environment. The API interacts with an interface provided by the instrumentation data source to provide functionality and connectivity that is not otherwise provided by the instrumentation data source. The API also provides access to instrumentation data in a manner that is consistent with the models and classes provided by the runtime platform.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2001Date of Patent: December 1, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Travis J. Muhlestein, Corina E. Feuerstein, Justin Grant, Markus Horstmann, Radu Rares Palanca, Alan G. Boshier

Patent number: 6493719Abstract: A method and system that simplify the management of enterprise network devices and information through the use of scripts and a scripting object model. An API is provided that transforms scripts passed from a scripting engine into the existing “low-level” COM syntax required for accessing system management object information. A scripting engine interprets a script and works with the API to translate script instructions into the COM method calls needed to directly access properties and methods of CIMOM objects from a script. Other aspects related to scripting are handled, including collections, events, monikers and security. Collections enable a set of objects to be serviced iteratively, for example, to manipulate or retrieve properties for a set of resources in simple loop. Events enable queries to be made asynchronously, such that calls return immediately and complete via event notifications.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1999Date of Patent: December 10, 2002Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Roger W. Booth, Alan G. Boshier, Corina E. Feuerstein, Irena Hudis
