  • Patent number: 11674487
Abstract: A fuel injector includes a needle valve including a spring-retaining section and a guide section that is adjacent to the spring-retaining section. The spring-retaining section includes an elongated portion and a flange that are together configured to support a spring assembly. The guide section includes a plurality of constricted portions alternatingly arranged with a plurality of expanded portions to define an undulating shape of the guide section. Each of the plurality of expanded portions includes a plurality of indentations to permit fuel to travel therealong to exit an outlet of the fuel injector. The guide section has a length that is substantially equal to a length of the spring-retaining section.

  • Patent number: 9828987
Abstract: A pump includes a reservoir configured to receive a fluid pressurized by a boost pump. The pump also includes at least one pumping mechanism configured to receive a first flow of fluid from the reservoir and direct the first flow of fluid into a discharge passage of the pump without pumping the first flow of fluid when priming the pump. • Publication number: 20170045022
Abstract: A fuel pump system configured to control a pressure pulse within a fuel system. The fuel pump system includes a conduit and a pump fluidly coupled to the conduit. The conduit has a conduit volume and is configured to contain fuel within. The pump includes a first pump stage in which the pump defines a maximum pump displacement and a second pump stage in which the pump defines a minimum pump displacement. The pump is configured to provide an output mass of fuel to the conduit when the pump transitions from the first pump stage to the second pump stage, causing pressure of the fuel within the conduit to pulse. The maximum pump displacement is set to a value defined by a ratio of the output mass of fuel per the conduit volume needed to maintain the pressure pulse in the conduit within a predetermined pressure pulse range.

  • Patent number: 9376992
Abstract: A dual fuel injector in a dual common rail fuel system includes an injector body defining a liquid fuel supply passage to a liquid fuel nozzle outlet, and a gaseous fuel supply passage to a gaseous fuel nozzle outlet. A liquid fuel needle check is movable within the injector body and has an opening hydraulic surface exposed to a fuel pressure of a liquid fuel common rail. A gaseous fuel needle check is positioned side by side with the liquid fuel needle check and has an opening hydraulic surface exposed to the fuel pressure of the liquid fuel common rail. Sensitivity to differences in gaseous fuel rail pressure and liquid fuel rail pressure is reduced by the design.

  • Patent number: 8977473
Abstract: A method of operating a dual fuel compression ignition engine includes controlling a liquid fuel pressure within the liquid fuel common rail toward a desired liquid fuel pressure, and controlling a gaseous fuel pressure within the gaseous fuel common rail toward a desired gaseous fuel pressure that is less than the desired liquid fuel pressure. The method also includes commanding a change in the liquid fuel pressure to a decreased liquid fuel pressure that is less than both the desired liquid fuel pressure and a current gaseous fuel pressure. The liquid fuel pressure is maintained above the gaseous fuel pressure during a transition of the liquid fuel pressure toward the decreased liquid fuel pressure by executing the pressure control algorithm.
