Publication number: 20240083133Abstract: Rolls of an embosser laminator unit may be calibrated with an iterative process of moving axial ends of the roll a set incremental distance until contact between the rolls is made and then making a correction to the distance based upon the end of the roll making contact. The rolls may be move an initial position where the faces of the rolls are devoid of contact with each other. One or both of the rolls may be rotated. The distance between the ends of the rolls may be decreased until the faces of the rolls make contact with each other. The distance between the first ends of the rolls may be increased by an incremental amount, and a determination of contact between the faces of the rolls may be made by alternate movement of the rolls by the incremental amount and position prior to contact.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 14, 2023Publication date: March 14, 2024Inventor: Cory L. Publication number: 20230294946Abstract: A method for unwinding includes loading a first reel of web material into a first unwind position where the web is unwound. A splicing unit is then moved in the machine direction toward the first unwind position until there is sufficient space to allow a further reel to be loaded into a second unwind position where the web from the second reel is unwound once loaded. Then, the web from the first reel is spliced to the second reel, and the web of the first reel is thereafter cut. The process continues in the opposite direction after removing the first reel from the first unwind position. The web of the second reel is unwound in the second position, the splicing unit is moved toward the second unwind position until there is sufficient space to allow a further reel to be loaded into the first unwind position.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 16, 2023Publication date: September 21, 2023Inventor: Cory L. Patent number: 11691839Abstract: A control system is provided for a converting line. The converting line has an unwinder for unwinding web material from a roll of web material and at least one independently driven roll for directing the web material unwound from the unwinder to the converting line. The control system has a controller and a tension sensor configured to be arranged downstream of the at least one driven roll. The tension sensor is configured to sense a tension in the web as the web is passed downstream of the driven roll, generate a signal indicative of sensed web tension, and transmit the signal of sensed web tension to the controller. The controller is configured to a generate and transmit to the unwinder a signal to change the speed of the unwinder based upon the tension sensed by the tension sensor.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2021Date of Patent: July 4, 2023Assignee: PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE COMPANYInventors: Cory L. Publication number: 20230150077Abstract: A tissue log cutting saw has an arm movable orbitally within an interior of saw house. A spindle and housing is mounted to the arm. A tool holder with a blade is arrangeable at a first end of the spindle, and an opposite second end rotationally drives the spindle while providing access to an operator of a clamp in the spindle. The clamp is moveable between a hold position in which the clamp engages the tool holder at the first end, and a release position in which the clamp disengages from the tool holder and allows the tool holder to be removed from the first end. An actuator mounted to a structure separate from the arm has an end effector that cooperates with the operator of the clamp to enable the tool holder to be released from the clamp to facilitate automatic changing of a blade of the saw.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 3, 2022Publication date: May 18, 2023Inventors: Jonathon T. Zahn, Cory L. Schubring

Patent number: 11447362Abstract: An apparatus supports a convolutely wound log of web material during cutting of the convolutely wound log, and includes a bottom support link operatively pivotally coupled to a support frame and a side support link operatively pivotally coupled to the support frame and the bottom support link. A flexible member operatively coupled to a distal end of the side support link extends tangentially from the side support link and curves away from the side support link and the bottom support link so that a portion of the flexible member is spaced away from the side support link and the bottom support link. The spaced away portion of the flexible member together with the side support link and the bottom support link at least in part define a support surface for supporting the convolutely wound log when the log is directed into the apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2020Date of Patent: September 20, 2022Assignee: PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE COMPANYInventors: Jonathon T. Patent number: 11254535Abstract: A control system for a converting line has a sensor configured to sense a distance between the sensor and a surface of a roll of web material as the roll of web material is unwound from an unwinder and directed to the converting line. The controller is configured to: (i) determine a diameter measurement of the roll as the roll rotates based upon the sensor signals; (ii) store a plurality of data structures in a memory of a controller of a control system wherein the data structures comprise a plurality of data items associated together as the diameter measurements of the roll of the web material; (iii) process by a statistical regression analysis the data structures associated with the diameter; and (iv) generate signals for controlling the converting line based upon the processed diameter measurements.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2019Date of Patent: February 22, 2022Assignee: PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE COMPANYInventors: Cory L. Publication number: 20210403266Abstract: A converting line for coreless roll products includes a rewinding machine and a controller. A log of convolutely wound web material is wound in the rewinding machine during a wind cycle. A diameter of the log, a caliper of the web material, and an amount of tension of the web is determined at a plurality of time points during a time period of the winding cycle. The controller is enabled to generate a signal to change an operating condition of the converting line based upon at least one of a diameter determination at a time point during the wind cycle, a caliper determination at a time point during the wind cycle, a wound web amount determination at a time point during the wind cycle, and a tension determination at a time point during the wind cycle.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 17, 2021Publication date: December 30, 2021Inventors: Michael E.
