  • Patent number: 8915058
Abstract: A heat transfer arrangement for a fluid-washed body having first and second ends and a fluid-washed surface extending there-between. The arrangement includes a heat transfer member extending from the first end at least part way along the body towards the second end. A heat source is arranged in use to heat the heat transfer member in the vicinity of the first end of the body. A plurality of thermal control layers are provided on the heat transfer member, each of the layers having a different thermal conductivity and being juxtaposed so as to create a thermal conductivity profile which varies along the length of the member. The arrangement may be used for prevention of icing of an aerofoil body such as a blade, vane or the like.

  • Patent number: 8657561
Abstract: A rotor blade comprising a core blade section; and a trailing edge section, the trailing edge section being attached to the core blade section along a join interface. The trailing edge section comprises a shape memory material which is actuable so as to cause selective deformation of the trailing edge section between a first condition in which a trailing edge of the trailing edge section follows a substantially smooth profile and a second condition in which the trailing edge is perturbed. The direction of the perturbation may be oblique or perpendicular to the direction of flow over the blade in use. The rotor blade may be a fan or propeller for a gas turbine engine.

  • Publication number: 20110219764
Abstract: An actuator comprises an actuator element in the form of a lamina 2 made from a shape memory material. A heating element 6 is bonded to the lamina 2 and serves to heat the lamina 2 to cause it change phase and thereby operate the actuator. The heating element 6 is encapsulated in a bonding layer 4 which is bonded to the lamina 2. The heating element 6 is made from a superelastic and/or shape memory effect material, for example an alloy such as NiTi, which exhibits superelastic properties so that the heating element 6 can follow the strain induced in the lamina 2 without being strained beyond its elastic limit.
