Patent number: 8347978Abstract: A driving tool having a driver, a power source, a sensor and a controller. The power source selectively provides an input to the driver to cause the driver to translate along an axis. The sensor senses a condition in the power source that is indicative of a level of kinetic energy of an element in the power source and generates a sensor signal in response thereto. The controller is coupled to the power source and the sensor and is responsive to the sensor signal for deactivating the power source to inhibit the power source from providing the input to the driver when the level of kinetic energy of the element in the power source is below a predetermined threshold. A method for operating a driving tool is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2005Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Michael Forster, Craig A. Schell, Paul Gross, Charles L. Bradenbaugh, IV, Nathan Cruise, Erik Ekstrom

Publication number: 20130000935Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a shield assembly for a handheld tool device such as an angle grinder. The shield assembly is selectively repositionable with respect to the cutting tool. A lock mechanism secures the shield assembly in discrete rotational positions relative to the cutting tool. The shield assembly includes a guard member and a bumper member, and an alignment feature configured to align the relative positions of guard member and the bumper member, thereby positing the members in a predetermined relative orientation. With this configuration, the shield assembly is selectively repositionable via a “hands-free” mechanism that permits a user to adjust the position of the shield assembly by simply contacting the shield assembly against a work surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2012Publication date: January 3, 2013Applicant: BLACK & DECKER INC.Inventors: Joseph P. Kelleher, Earnest N. Copeland, JR., Craig A. Schell, Paul K. Trautner

Patent number: 8316958Abstract: A control scheme is provided for a power tool having a rotary shaft. The control scheme includes: monitoring rotational motion of the tool generally about a longitudinal axis of the shaft; detecting a condition of the tool based on the rotational motion of the tool; and controlling torque imparted to the shaft upon detecting the tool condition, where the torque is inversely related to an angular displacement of the tool about the longitudinal axis of the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2006Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Craig A. Schell, Michael K. Forster

Patent number: 8286723Abstract: A power tool includes an output shaft configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis, a motor drivably connected to the output shaft to impart rotary motions thereto, and a rotational motion sensor spatially separated from the output shaft and operable to determine the user-imparted rotational motion of the power tool with respect to the longitudinal axis. A controller is electrically connected to the rotational motion sensor and the motor. The controller determines angular velocity of the power tool about the axis, rotational displacement of the power tool about the axis, and/or a direction of the rotational displacement using input from the rotational motion sensor. The controller then controls the motor according to the angular velocity, the rotational displacement, and/or the direction of the rotational displacement.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2011Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Daniel Puzio, Craig Schell, Daniele Brotto, Andrew Seman, Jr., Scott Eshleman, Joseph Kelleher, Sankarshan Murthy, Gabriel Concari, Thomas Bodine, Michael Haupt, Curtis Watenpaugh

Publication number: 20120160529Abstract: An improved method is provided for operating a power tool. The method includes: monitoring rotational motion of the power tool about an axis using a rotational motion sensor disposed in the power tool; determining a direction of the rotational motion about the axis; and driving the output member in a direction defined by the detected rotational motion of the tool, where the output member is driven by a motor residing in the power tool. Thus, the output member is drive clockwise when the rotational motion of the tool is clockwise about the axis and the output member is drive counter-clockwise when the rotational motion of the tool is counter-clockwise about the axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 24, 2012Publication date: June 28, 2012Inventors: Scott ESHLEMAN, Craig SCHELL, Andrew E. SEMAN, JR., Daniel PUZIO, Daniele C. BROTTO, Joseph P. KELLEHER, Christopher W. SHOOK, Steven J. PHILLIPS, Dale W. BOSWALL, James B. WATSON
