    Abstract: This invention relates to a composition, comprising: (A) a compound represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein in Formula (A-I), R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently hydrocarbyl groups, X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are independently O or S, and n is zero to 3; and (B) an acylated nitrogen-containing compound having a substituent of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms, In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (C) a second phosphorus compound other than (A), said second phosphorus compound being a phosphorus acid, phosphorus acid ester, phosphorus acid salt, or derivative thereof, In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (D) an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulfur acid, carboxytic acid or phenol. In one embodiment, the inventive composition further comprises (E) a thiocarbamate. These compositions are useful in providing lubricating compositions and functional fluids with enhanced antiwear properties.

    Abstract: The present invention is a composition having improved water tolerance properties which is adapted for use as a functional fluid or lubricating composition. The composition is comprised of a major amount of a synthetic or mineral oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of a water tolerance fix compound. The water tolerance fix compound is present in an amount which is effective to improve the water tolerance properties of the composition as a whole which amount is in the range of from about 0.1 parts by weight to about 5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the oil. The water tolerance fix compound is prepared by reacting a nitrogen-containing phosphorus-free carboxylic acid (A) with an alkanol tertiary monoamine (B) to form an ester-salt reaction product. The water tolerance fix compound is present in the oil along with 5 parts by weight of water or less per 100 parts by weight of the oil.

    Abstract: A number of functional characteristics of a gear lubricant are improved by including within the lubricant an additive package comprised of (a) a treated zinc dithiophosphate and (b) an overbased carboxylate which is preferably borated. The additive preferably includes (c) an alkylamine, (d) a sulfurized olefin and (e) a polymeric foam inhibitor. The components of the package provide an interdependent synergistic improvement of numerous performance characteristics of the gear lubricant such as reducing copper strip corrosion, increasing thermal stability and reducing the amount of rust, and odor. The limited slip or anti-chatter performance of the oil is also improved.

Other components such as viscosity improvers and antifoaming agent are generally present in the fluid.

    Abstract: A corrosion inhibitor additive for gear oil formulations is disclosed in the form of an overbased carboxylate which can be in a borated or non-borated form. Borated versions of the overbased carboxylate are preferred and are obtained by reacting a boron reactant such as boric acid with an overbased carboxylate. The overbased carboxylate in its borated and non-borated forms has been found to be effective in improving the corrosion inhibiting properties of gear oil formulations which are used under severe operating conditions wherein the gear oil might come into contact with contaminant water. A method of improving the corrosion resistance of a gear oil having contaminant water therein is also disclosed.

The lubricant fluids are particularly useful in reducing double detent and clashing during manual transmission shifting.

    Abstract: Polymeric compositions comprised of particularly disclosed oil-soluble polymers and specific oil-soluble acrylate polymerization products are disclosed. The oil-soluble polymer (A) is a polymer selected from the group consisting of a non-aromatic mono-olefin having at least three carbon atoms, and a copolymer of the non-aromatic mono-olefin with an aromatic monoolefin, the polymer having a number average molecular weight of about 500 to about 100,000. The oil-soluble acrylate polymerization product (B) is at least one ester of the formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.C(X)--COOR wherein X is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group, and R is a monovalent hydrocarbyl group containing at least four carbon atoms, or an ether derivative of said hydrocarbyl group. The components (A) and (B) are preferably present in a weight ratio of (A):(B) of about 20:1 to about 1:10.
