  • Patent number: 5582460
Abstract: A chair is provided having a blow molded back rest and a mechanism which permits the back rest to pivot rearwardly and to be vertically adjusted. The mechanism has a carrier block slidably engaging vertical slots in a support member for vertical adjustment movement. The back rest is operatively attached to the carrier block so that the back rest can move in the vertical direction in unison with the carrier block or pivot rearwardly. The carrier block has a curved integral spring which engages the rear of the back rest to bias the back rest forward and to regulate the rearward pivoting motion as the user reclines.

  • Patent number: 5542159
Abstract: A coupling member for coupling two tubular members together includes an attachment portion and a coupling portion formed integrally therewith. The attachment portion includes a member which partially wraps around the tubular member and forms a glide. The coupling portion includes a male coupling element juxtaposed next to a female coupling element. The male coupling element is receivable within a female element of a second identical coupling member and the female coupling element receives a male coupling element of the second coupling member. By this configuration, identical coupling members may be snapped to respective tubular base frames of two chairs to gang the chairs together when the coupling members are mated.

  • Patent number: 5478137
Abstract: An assembly for affixing an arm pad to an arm rest of the chair without using a visible fastener and without the need to fashion a hole in the arm rest. The assembly comprises two shells which fit on the arm rest which have a variety of latching projections. An insert molded within a resilient arm pad has a corresponding variety of ports. Shells are fitted onto the arm rest. Upon pressing the insert within the arm pad against the shells, the projections on the shells latch the corresponding ports in the insert within the arm pad.

  • Patent number: 5419617
Abstract: A chair is provided which comprises a mounting and latch member which is attached to the the chair arm to form a male assembly section and a female member which is attached to bottom of the seat support structure to provide a female section thereon. The female member has a slot for receiving and holding the mounting member and an attached arm so that the chair arm and the seat support structure are firmly and positively affixed to each other in a manner which also readily permits intentional removal. A resilient latch is resiliently and flexibly joined to the member for engaging the female member in order to prevent the male section from being withdrawn from the slot of the female member until the latch is disengaged.

  • Patent number: 5415459
Abstract: A chair is provided having at least one arm rest which may be laterally adjusted in order to adjust the width between the opposing arm rests and accommodate different size users. The arm rest is attached to the chair arm for lateral movement inboard and outboard of the chair arm. The arm rest is also attached to the chair arm for pivotable movement between a locked position wherein a latch attached to one of the arm rest or the chair arm latchedly engages the other of the arm rest or the chair arm for selectively locking the arm rest in the desired lateral position and an unlocked position for permitting the arm rest to be laterally adjusted. In one embodiment, the arm rest has a latch mechanism which comprises a lower bracket rigidly attached to the chair arm and an upper bracket slidably and pivotably attached to the lower bracket so that the upper bracket pivots between the locked and unlocked positions and may move in the lateral direction relative to the lower bracket in the unlocked portion.

  • Patent number: 5324096
Abstract: An adjustable chair arm assembly is provided which can be vertically adjusted in order to readily accommodate users of different sizes. The chair arm assembly provides support members having overlapping portions which cooperate to slide vertically with respect to each other. One of the support members maintains a relatively fixed position with the chair and the other support member, having an arm rest, slides vertically with respect to the first support member to adjust the height of the arm rest.A series of support projections are vertically disposed along the overlapping portion of one of the support members. A latch member, mounted for sliding movement along the support projections, has at least one latch projection for selectively engaging the support projections at any position therealong.
