Abstract: A cooking system includes a set-down plate for setting down cookware, and a detection unit designed to detect the cookware. The detection unit includes a radiation source for emitting electromagnetic radiation and a radiation detector for receiving electromagnetic radiation. A first radiation guiding element transmits the electromagnetic radiation from the radiation source to a set-down region of the set-down plate, and a second radiation guiding element transmits electromagnetic radiation reflected from the cookware to the radiation detector.
