  • Patent number: 5105232
Abstract: A quantum field-effect directional coupler is described comprised of two quantum waveguides closely spaced apart with an adjacent gate electrode over the space between waveguides. The coupling of electron probability density between waveguides is controlled by the voltage applied to the gate electrode. The coupler implements a voltage-controlled current switch. Several couplers can be connected to perform multiplex/demultiplexing functions.

  • Patent number: 4873439
Abstract: X-ray detection systems based upon the nonlinear optical properties of multiple quantum well (MQW) semiconductor structures is described. X-rays generate carriers which change the index of refraction of the MQW material. Light from a probe beam may be scattered or reflected off the MQW structure and modulated by the change in refractive index caused by the carriers generated by the incident x-ray photons. A planar and microetalon approach is illustrated.
