  • Publication number: 20050056030
Abstract: An adaptable semiconductor chip cooling system having a readily openable enclosure defining a chamber configured to hold a printed circuit board carrying components to be cooled. Within the enclosure is a sprayer delivery system with a height-controllable sprayer for spraying hot components. The sprayer delivery system has an actuator configured to move the sprayer among positions for spraying different components. The actuator can be of the types used for ink-jet printers or X-Y plotters. Alternatively, the actuator can be a continuous ribbon loop, or a series of radially extending rails. The actuator and sprayer are controlled by a controller, which also controls a configuration system that configures the sprayer delivery system for use with different boards. The controller uses sensors that sense the temperature of the hot components.

  • Publication number: 20050058178
Abstract: An automated test method characterizes the performance of commercially available thermal interface materials (TIM) for electronic cooling. Such automated internal test vehicle provides an independent study of various TIM's. A spectrum of materials are preferably tested using automated methods so the results are reported in a consistent way. Such reports simplify the comparison and selection of appropriate TIM material for various end-user applications. Such automated test method is observed to be faster and easier to use. It requires minimal operator intervention during the test.

  • Publication number: 20050038562
Abstract: A method for semi-autonomous operation of a robotic device in a room. In the method, one or more goal points are set and the distances between the robotic device and the one or more goal points are determined. A first one of the one or more goal points is selected and the robotic device is maneuvered to travel to the first one of the one or more goal points.

  • Publication number: 20050023363
Abstract: An air conditioning unit may be controlled based on an index of performance designed to quantify re-circulation levels. For the air conditioning unit control, an index of performance set point is determined and the index of performance for a first iteration is measured. In addition, it is determined whether the measured index of performance for the first iteration equals or exceeds the index of performance set point. Moreover, a supply air temperature of the air conditioning unit is increased in response to the measured index of performance for the first iteration equaling or exceeding the index of performance set point.

  • Publication number: 20050028017
Abstract: A primary power supply and a secondary power supply are operable to supply power to at least one electrical device. A power demand of the electrical device is determined, and an efficient operating point for the primary power supply is determined. One or more of the primary power supply and the secondary power supply are used to supply power to the electrical device based on whether the primary power supply operating at an efficient operating point is operable to meet the power demand of the at least one electrical device.

  • Publication number: 20050024826
Abstract: A system for detecting at least one environmental condition in a room. The system includes one or more detecting devices having a sensor configured to detect the at least one environmental condition and to display the detected at least one environmental condition. The system also includes one or more reader devices configured to image the one or more detecting devices and a controller configured to communicate with the one or more reader devices. The controller is operable to control the one or more reader devices and to receive the images from the one or more reader devices. In addition, the controller is configured to determine the at least one environmental condition based upon the images of the one or more detecting devices. The system further includes a memory accessible by the controller, and the controller is configured to store the at least one environmental condition in the memory.

  • Publication number: 20050010499
Abstract: A system for managing inventory of components in a room. The system includes an identification device configured to communicate identification information relating to an associated component, a reader device configured to substantially autonomously receive the identification information from the identification device, and means for identifying the locations of the identification devices. The system also includes a controller configured to communicate with the reader device and compile the identification information received from the reader device and the locations of the identification devices to maintain an inventory of the components.

  • Publication number: 20030158718
Abstract: A system and method to model and design a layout of an Internet Datacenter (IDC) for cooling. The IDC is defined as a collection of cells, the cells of the IDC are pre-characterized, an arrangement of the cells within the IDC is determined, and a profile for one or more parameters of interest for each cell are determined.

  • Patent number: 6457321
Abstract: A spray cooling system for semiconductor devices. An ink-jet type spray device sprays droplets of a cooling fluid onto the semiconductor devices. The devices vaporize the liquid, which gets passed through a roll bond panel, or other heat exchanger, and is pumped into a spring loaded reservoir that feeds the spray device.

  • Patent number: 6115251
Abstract: An improved apparatus is disclosed for cooling the power dissipating components of a computer subsystem, including microprocessors and hard disk drive assemblies. The apparatus utilizes the computer subsystem's chassis or enclosure, by configuring it as a roll bond panel formed from two sheets bonded together to define a fluid channel therebetween. Various concentrated sources of power dissipation are mounted within the enclosure on special component panels that themselves define a fluid channel. A working fluid is disposed within the channels of the component panels and the enclosure panel. During operation, heat generated by the sources of power dissipation is transferred to the working liquid within the fluid channels of the component panels and, in turn, to the working fluid disposed within the fluid channel of the enclosure panel, for dissipation by convection.
