  • Patent number: 5942476
Abstract: A low-viscosity overbased hydrocarbyl phenate-carboxylate is produced by contacting a mixture of a hydrocarbyl phenate, at least one solvent, metal hydroxide, aqueous metal chloride, and an alkyl polyhydric alcohol containing from one to five carbon atoms with carbon dioxide under overbasing reaction conditions. The hydrocarbyl phenate is treated with a long-chain carboxylic acid, anhydride or salt thereof to form the hydrocarbyl phenate-carboxylate before, during, or subsequent to overbasing. The hydrocarbyl phenate can be sulfurized or unsulfurized.

  • Patent number: 5922922
Abstract: An alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon is produced having the following properties: (a) less than 40 wt. % of the alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon is 2-aryl; and (b) at least 20 wt. % of the alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon is a monoalkylate. That alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon is produced by isomerizing a normal alpha-olefin having from 20 to 28 carbon atoms in the presence of a first acidic catalyst to produce a partially-branched, isomerized olefin, then either benzene or toluene is alkylated with the partially-branched, isomerized olefin in the presence of a second solid, acidic catalyst. The first acidic catalyst can be a molecular sieve with a one-dimensional pore system. The second acidic catalyst can be a zeolite Y having a silica to alumina ratio of at least 40:1.

  • Patent number: 5728657
Abstract: An overbased phenate stearate is produced by overbasing a mixture that comprises sulfurized phenate, metal stearate (such as calcium stearate), at least one solvent, calcium hydroxide, and water, by contacting the mixture with carbon dioxide in the presence of an alkyl polyhydric alcohol, such as ethylene glycol. The level of agitation is maintained at a level sufficiently high so that all solids are suspended over the length of the overbasing step. The polyhydric alcohol to water ratio is maintained sufficiently high so that the ratio is at least 4:1 at the end of the overbasing step. The overbased mixture is stripped to produce an overbased phenate stearate having less than 0.10 vol. % fine sediments.
