Patent number: 5722922Abstract: An exercise machine has a base with an upright frame. A carriage is movable along the length of the frame and connectable thereto by a pin which registers with apertures formed in the frame. The pin is connected to a bridge with spans between cheek plates of the carriage. A lever structure and a butterfly exercise structure are pivotally secured to the carriage. Resistance modules are connectable to the carriage and the lever structure and the butterfly exercise structure to resist movement. A bench is provided for the user and is connected at one end to one frame. A stepper exercise assembly is also attached to the frame. A stepper has hydraulic resistance cylinders which include springs to urge the treadles in an upward direction.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1995Date of Patent: March 3, 1998Assignee: ICON Health & Fitness, Inc.Inventors: Scott R. Patent number: 5645509Abstract: An exercise system is comprised of an exercise machine, an external source of input signals, a control console and a display. The control console is associated with the exercise machine having an adjustment structure for a moveable member such as an endless belt on a powered treadmill or the pedals of an exercise cycle. Adjustment structures are connected to regulate the speed of the movable member as well as the resistance to movement. The control console has programs selectable and alterable from the external source at a remote location. A program supplies a variable input over selected time segments to regulate and control the adjustment structure such as the motor controller of the treadmill or a resistance strap associated with an inertia wheel of the exercise cycle.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1994Date of Patent: July 8, 1997Assignee: Icon Health & Fitness, Inc.Inventors: Dane P. Brewer, Curt G. Bingham

Patent number: 5259611Abstract: The speed of operating structure of an exercise machine is sensed by a sheave and belt drive and rotates a worm gear interconnected to a reduction gear assembly to rotate a driver at a preselected rate. The driver is interconnected to drive a cam surface upon which a cam follower rides to in turn operate a pivoted lever. The lever is interconnected to transmit the movement of the cam follower to operate the resistance means of the exercise machine to increase or decrease the resistance being applied to the operating structure of the exercise machine.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1991Date of Patent: November 9, 1993Assignee: Proform Fitness Products, Inc.Inventors: William T. Dalebout, Curt G. Bingham

Patent number: 5135216Abstract: A resistance assembly useful to provide resistance to exercise movements performed by a user on an exercise machine includes a pair of spool-like ends disposed within a resilient loop which passes around a portion of each spool end. Each spool end is configured as a hollow open-ended cylinder with planar, annular flanges extending from both ends of the cylinder. A shield extends from a segment of one of the annular flanges of each spool end. Each spool end is composed of first and second interfitting spool parts, each comprising a hollow open-ended cylinder with one of two flanges extending therefrom. The resistance of the assembly can be varied by exchanging the resilient loop for any of a plurality of loops having different resistive properties.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1991Date of Patent: August 4, 1992Assignee: Proform Fitness Products, Inc.Inventors: Curt G. Bingham, S. Ty Meason

Patent number: 5104120Abstract: A control system includes an adjustment knob to regulate the resistance of the exercise machine such as a treadmill, rowing machine, or stationary exercise cycle. Various indicia are positioned proximate the knob so the user may specifically select an exercise program and real time feedback of exercise performance through the use an ear clip supplying pulse information or other biological data which is converted and displayed for observation by the user.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1989Date of Patent: April 14, 1992Assignee: Proform Fitness Products, Inc.Inventors: Scott R. Watterson, William T. Dalebout, Curt G. Bingham

Patent number: 5062627Abstract: A reciprocator for use with a stepper-type exercise machine has a channel as a rocker element. The channel has left and right ends which rotate about a pivot axis below the pedals. Rollers are mounted at each end of the channel. The rollers have a groove to engage with arcuate roller engagement structures attached to the underside of each pedal. The rollers are each mounted on a mount bar which spans the opening of the channel at the left and right ends. A pair of springs are positioned at each end to urge the roller away from the sides of the channel.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1991Date of Patent: November 5, 1991Assignee: Proform Fitness Products, Inc.Inventor: Curt G. Patent number: 5000444Abstract: An exercise cycle of the invention includes a frame, a seat, a pedal assembly, an air-resistance device, and a movable handlebar assembly. The crankshaft of the pedal assembly is attached to a first gear which is then in turn mechanically linked to the second gear and pivotally attached to the handlebars to cause an oscillating synchronous motion upon operation of the pedal assembly.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1988Date of Patent: March 19, 1991Assignee: Proform Fitness Products, Inc.Inventors: William T. Dalebout, Curt G. Bingham

Patent number: 5000443Abstract: An exercise apparatus for performing striding-type exercises is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of leg members depended from and rotatably associated with a pair of journals connected to a frame. Each of the leg members is fitted with a foot support. The leg members are mechanically associated one with another by a cable and pulley arrangement adapted for providing a reciprocative action of one by member opposite to that of the other upon a movement of either leg member.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1989Date of Patent: March 19, 1991Assignee: Weslo, Inc.Inventors: William T. Dalebout, Curt G. Bingham

Patent number: 4981294Abstract: An exercise cycle having dual resistance structure as disclosed. An exercise cycle utilizing a pedal and crank and sprocket to drive a chain to a front mounted plastic wheel which employs a plurality of blades to form a fan to provide air resistance when the wheel is rotated. Additionally, the hub of the wheel is contacted with a strap to cover a significant portion of the circumference of the wheel whereby the strap may be tightened to increase the frictional resistance between the strap and the hub of the wheel to provide additional resistance when the front wheel is rotated by means of an exerciser pedaling the exercise cycle. A heat dissipation band covers the circumference of the wheel to dissipate heat due to the frictional resistance of the strap.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1990Date of Patent: January 1, 1991Assignee: Proform Fitness Products, Inc.Inventors: William T. Dalebout, Curt G. Bingham

Patent number: 4971316Abstract: An exercise cycle of the invention includes a frame, a seat, a pedal assembly, and movable handlebar assembly and an air resistance device mounted at the rear of the cycle. The frame has a rear support unit, a front support unit and an interconnecting member between them. A diagonal member is attached to the rear support unit and angles upward toward the front of the cycle. The seat is attached to the top of this diagonal member. The pivoting handlebars extend upward from the first support unit. An empty space is provided between the diagonal member and the handlebars.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1990Date of Patent: November 20, 1990Assignee: Proform Fitness Products, Inc.Inventors: William T.
