  • Publication number: 20070151265
Abstract: A startup control algorithm for a multiple compressor liquid chiller system is provided wherein the maximum number of compressors to be started to satisfy system load conditions is provided. The control algorithm designates all of the compressors of the multiple compressor system for starting and reduces the number to be started in response to the satisfaction of several predetermined criteria. The predetermined criteria are related to the leaving chilled liquid temperature, the shutdown time for the chiller system and the last operating time period for the chiller system.

  • Publication number: 20070151269
Abstract: A control algorithm is provided for controlling an economizer circuit in a chiller system. The control algorithm adjusts the position of a feed valve in the economizer circuit in response to measured system operating parameters to maintain a level of liquid refrigerant in a flash tank of the economizer circuit. The measured system operating parameters can include the load of the compressor and the pressure and temperature of refrigerant in the flash tank.

  • Publication number: 20070144193
Abstract: A method is disclosed for controlling a discharge pressure of a compressor relative to a suction pressure of the compressor. The discharge pressure and suction pressure of the compressor are monitored and compared with a predetermined maximum pressure ratio of discharge pressure to suction pressure. If the pressure ratio of discharge pressure to suction pressure exceeds a predetermined pressure ratio limit less than the maximum pressure ratio, a controller unloads the compressor. The predetermined pressure ratio limit is determined relative to the measured suction pressure. The discharge pressure and suction pressure are further monitored and the compressor is inhibited from being reloaded for a predetermined time delay. After the predetermined time delay has elapsed, the compressor is reloaded only if i) the discharge pressure falls below a predetermined reload pressure and ii) the chiller system requires additional cooling capacity.

  • Publication number: 20070056300
Abstract: A capacity control algorithm for a multiple compressor liquid chiller system is provided wherein the speed and number of compressors in operation are controlled in order to obtain a leaving liquid temperature setpoint. In response to an increase in the load in the chiller system, the algorithm determines if a compressor should be started and adjusts the operating speed of all operating compressors when an additional compressor is started. In response to a decrease in the load in the chiller system with multiple compressors operating, the algorithm determines if a compressor should be de-energized and adjusts the operating speed of all remaining operating compressors when a compressor is de-energized.

  • Publication number: 20050262859
Abstract: A control algorithm for controlling an economizer circuit in a chiller system is provided. The control algorithm opens and closes a port valve in the economizer circuit in response to predetermined criteria to engage and disengage the economizer circuit. The predetermined criteria can include an operating parameter of a compressor and a level of liquid refrigerant in a flash tank.

  • Publication number: 20050223725
Abstract: A noise control method is provided for a cooling system having at least one refrigerant circuit. The refrigerant circuit includes a compressor, a condenser, at least one condenser fan, and an evaporator. Noise control is only performed periodically in response to requirements for reduced operation at predetermined times. The request for reduced noise triggers the commencement of the noise control method. The noise control method involves reducing the operating speed of the compressor, as well as reducing the operating speed of at least one condenser fan, to within a predetermined range of allowable reduced operating speeds. The noise control method temporarily overrides the ability of the cooling system to fully respond to increased cooling or heating demands.

  • Publication number: 20050190511
Abstract: A motor disconnect arrangement is provided for a variable speed drive having a plurality of inverters electrically connected in parallel to a DC link to power a plurality of motors. The disconnect arrangement includes a contactor or other disconnect device connected in series between each inverter output of the variable speed drive and its corresponding motor. The contactor operates to disconnect, isolate or remove the motor from the variable speed drive in the event of a failure of the motor. By removing a failed motor from the variable speed drive, the other motors connected to the variable speed drive can continue to operate normally.
