Patent number: 7194527Abstract: A system and method facilitating media browsing is provided. The invention includes a browsing component and a media display system that provides a focus media and related media. The focus media and the related media are associated based, at least in part, upon metadata. The invention further provides for an association identifier that identifies related media based, at least in part, upon metadata associated with the focus media and the related media. The association identifier can further cluster the related media based upon metadata associated with the related media.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2002Date of Patent: March 20, 2007Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Steven M. Patent number: 7120619Abstract: The present invention provides a unique method and user interface that facilitates accessing and browsing objects in which a user begins with a center object (e.g., one or a few focal objects) displayed on a screen and related objects are populated on the screen as well. The related objects can be further organized into clusters whereby each cluster or grouping of objects expands on a particular attribute of the center object. The attributes correspond to metadata. Thus, the objects are populated based upon the metadata of the center object. According to one aspect, the user can access one or more specific objects having a plurality of attributes and then relax at least one of the attributes to see what other objects share at least one attribute with the center object. According to another aspect, the object having the closest match to a search request can be centrally displayed with other close matches arranged by their respective metadata.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2003Date of Patent: October 10, 2006Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Steven M. Drucker, Curtis G. Wong, Asta L. Glatzer

Patent number: 7117453Abstract: The present invention provides a unique system and method for facilitating browsing, sorting, clustering, and filtering any number of media objects grouped together in a quick and easy manner. In particular, the invention involves annotating the media objects, which have been clustered, sorted, and/or filtered en masse rather than individually, with metadata. The media objects may be selected by a user and annotated with a plurality of metadata as desired by a user in order to optimize utilization of the media objects. The media objects may also be combined and/or mixed in any number of ways to create new media objects. Media objects may include an audio component, a visual component, a portion thereof, and/or any combination thereof.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2003Date of Patent: October 3, 2006Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Steven M. Drucker, Curtis G. Wong, Steve Glenner, Asta L. Glatzer, Steven D. DeMar

Patent number: 7099952Abstract: A system and method are disclosed which enable a user to locate target data from a temporal broadcast of data. The system includes a transportable identifier that represents the target data. The identifier further includes metadata that provides sufficient information about the broadcast of the target data such that the target data can be acquired when broadcast. The transportable identifier further may be sent to one or more other users to enable such users to locate the broadcast of the target data. As a result, one or more users may employ identifiers to locate the broadcast of the target data and, in turn, monitor and/or store the target data from the temporal broadcast.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2001Date of Patent: August 29, 2006Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Curtis G. Wong, Steven M. Drucker, Craig J. Mundie

Patent number: 6999083Abstract: A spectator experience corresponding to an occurrence of one or more games or events is generated based on each associated occurrence. The occurrence of a game or event varies in response to contributions and/or interactions of one or more participants of the game or event. The spectator experience enables users thereof to observe an augmented version of the game or event, such as by implementing enhanced viewpoint controls and/or other spectator related effects. In a particular aspect, the spectator experience can provide an indication of the spectators' presence, which is made available to the spectators and/or to the participants of the game.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2001Date of Patent: February 14, 2006Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Curtis G. Wong, Steven M. Drucker, Michael F. Cohen, Li-wei He, Asta L. Glatzer

Patent number: 6947935Abstract: The present invention is related to a system and method of caching data employing probabilistic predictive techniques. The system and method has particular application to multimedia systems for providing local storage of a subset of available viewing selections by assigning a value to a selection and retaining selections in the cache depending on the value and size of the selection. The value assigned to an item can represent the time-independent likelihood that a user will review an item at some time in the future. An initial value of an item can be based on the user's viewing habits, the user's viewing habit over particular time segment (e.g., early morning, late morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, primetime, late night) and/or viewing habits of a group of user's during a particular time segment.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2001Date of Patent: September 20, 2005Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Eric J. Horvitz, Carl M. Kadie, Stuart Ozer, Curtis G. Wong

Publication number: 20040168118Abstract: The present invention provides a unique system and method that facilitates remote browsing, viewing, and manipulating any suitable number of media items from a host location. In particular, the invention involves pulling desired media items from one or more host locations to view and/or edit them on a remote interactive media display, thereby freeing up use of the host location/computer. The media items sent to the remote interactive media display via wireless or wired connection are easily edited, organized, and viewed in any suitable order, arrangement, and timed-cycle with respect to per item viewing as well as viewing of items coincident with a real time calendar. The media items can be annotated and otherwise modified from the remote display and saved to the host location. The remote interactive media frame also includes a local storage for storing media items, thereby facilitating portability of the media frame when disconnected from the host.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 1, 2003Publication date: August 26, 2004Inventors: Curtis G.
