Abstract: The disclosure provides a drill bit including a bit body and a blade extending from the bit body. The blade includes a first element protruding from a surface of the blade and a second element protruding from the surface of the blade. The first element and the second element are each configured to extend or retract relative to the surface of the blade and are coupled to each other such that when the second element retracts relative to the surface of the blade, the first element extends relative to the surface of the blade. The first element is disposed within a first pocket formed in the surface of the blade, and the second element is disposed within a second pocket formed in the surface of the blade. A communication channel is formed between the first pocket and the second pocket.

  • Patent number: 11473423
Abstract: Disclosed are methods for transmitting data to a downhole tool. The methods include the option of confirming receipt and implementation of the transmitted data by the downhole tool. The disclosed methods utilize changes in RPM of the tool to convey the data through three separate changes in RPM. The changes in RPM are used to generate pulses suitable for identifying preprogrammed actions found within the memory of the downhole tool.

  • Publication number: 20220025710
Abstract: Disclosed is a downhole tool and method suitable for geosteering within a lateral formation. The downhole tool includes a gamma sensor for monitoring gamma radiation within the lateral formation. The method provides for monitoring of the location of the drill bit or a RSS within a borehole and correcting the angle of inclination to maintain the drill bit or RSS within the target zone of the lateral formation.

  • Patent number: 9540877
Abstract: A valve (11) for controlling the flow of a drilling fluid through a down-hole tool (10) positionable in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation. The down-hole tool has a housing with a drilling motor therein and a drill bit (1) at an end thereof. The drilling motor (9) has a housing with a rotor (206) rotationally movable in a rotor channel (204) as the drilling fluid passes through a rotor channel between the housing and the rotor. The rotor has a bypass channel therethrough for bypassing a portion of the drilling fluid therethrough. The valve includes a valve plate positionable upstream of the motor. The valve plate (200) has at least one flow passage (226) and at least one bypass passage (220) therethrough. The flow passage is in fluid communication with the rotor channel for passing the drilling fluid therethrough.

  • Publication number: 20120312603
Abstract: Disclosed is method for designing a fixed cutter drill bit comprising: (a) defining initial primary placement parameters for primary cutter elements; (b) repeatedly: selecting back up placement parameters for back up cutter elements; applying to a simulated formation a bit design having the combination of the defined initial primary placement parameters and the selected back up placement parameters; using the combination in the simulation and generating a value representative of a first design criteria of interest (such as resultant force on a cutter element, total out-of-balance force on the bit, resistance to slip stick, and resistance to bit vibration); comparing the generated value to a first predetermined acceptable value.
